Log book for the mean machine arrived yesterday,
Thought it was a 71 Traveler. When buying the chap said it had been laid up in a garage for 10 years and this is where it gets interesting.
Its actually on the logbook as declared Manufacture 1970 but.... first registered 1980 !
So assuming the 10 years it was laid up in a garage for was 10 years from new! what a result !
Just wondered is this normal? Sure goes a long way to explaining the pretty good condition of the metalwork.
Was there a manufacturing over run towards the end of production or something that might explain this?

There can be numerous reasons why the V5 states manufactured one date but registered another.
It might have been ex military and released from service in 1980.
Another way is that it was abroad (Ireland, Channel islands, Isle of Man etc) and imported in 1980.
It'd be nice to think it was stored from new for 10 years but I'm reasonable sure that if brand new then it'd be given a new registration applicable to year ie 1980.
What is the reg - 1970 or 1980. ie H/J reg or V/W reg ?
In 1980 even kit cars built up with parts from all sources were issued with current year reg (pre Q reg).

BTW I used to have a Capri that had it's first MOT at 10 years old. The owner bought it new when he retired and promtly had a heart attack so couldn't drive. The car had token mileage and had been kept in a garage for the period prior to me buying. He'd refused to sell to loads of people who wanted it and I was "interviewed" to see if I was a suitable new owner.

Hi Paul,
Well that was the story i got, its on an H plate says was registered and/or used. Declared manufactured 1970.
Think I'll send off for the full history from the DVLA at least then it will show all of the owners and dates.
Did that once with the first xr4i I bought, turned out to be the 1st trial one the police had in the UK so made for interesting reading and something none the 3 previous owners knew of.

The DVLA records certainly can make interesting reading.
I had a XJ6 that when I obtained the full record form DVLA I found it'd been registered with 4 different numbers (original from new, two personal and the final when I bought).
An old Land Rover turned out to be ex GPO telephones and the records traced fitment and removal of a capstan winch (weight changed) plus transfer to different departments.
A strange car from the local auctions was a prototype for replacement of the old blue invalid carriages. It was called a Salamander (4 wheeled with 1100cc Ford kent engine with autobox and body that looked like a cross between mini PopeMobile and Postman Pats van

Another Land Rover was one of the first Mersey tunnel recovery vehicles and I even found period photo's of it working.
Keep us up to date when you find out the reason for V5 entires as I'm intrigued.

First registered date being late rareley means it wasn't used before hand - I've had a whole bunch of cars where the first registered date is later.
This is just when the record was added to the DVLA database. If the car was imported, or if it was registered on paper in UK and not added onto the electronic records. My 57 shows first registered in the 90's however it had been used for 14 years and left (knackered) in a garage in 1971...
