Carburettor dissasembly

A friend has kindly offered to clean my carb using his ultra-sound cleaner. Being from the world of vintage motorcycles im more used to tinkering with Amal Monobloc's, so SU's are somewhat of a mystery! How best do i go about taking it to bits, are there any exploded diagrams or manuals available?

Hello YG,

a workshop manula would seem to be a good bet for you, seeing the amount of work you've got on.
S.U.'s are simple carburettors to work on but there are a few basic set up points. A workshop manual should outline those. Try google for an exploded diagram.

Burlen are the people for S.U. spares, information and manuals (Also do Amal), http://www.burlen.co.uk/default.aspx

Thanks alec, ive got a workshop manual on the way now.

Ill probably tackle the Carb tommorrow, is there anything i need to be aware of when just taking it apart? Or is it a common sense job as it were?

Oh, and whats the type of SU fitted to the Mog. Is it an HS4?

Standard carb is HS2 - very restricting air flow! If you take it apart you will need an 'overhaul' kit to put it back together. I suggest you just clean it all up without taking apart. Cilit Bang and/or Alloy Wheel cleaner (poundland) with an old toothbrush work well. If you are upgrading the engine - then look for an HIF 38 and an Mg Metro inlet manifold. They will make it go MUCH better.
