What the wiring colours mean.

I came across this while looking for something else. (How you do ).

It gives what the standard use for each wiring colour should be.

A useful guide to what that strange wire you've just found under the dashboard might be for (assuming whoever put it there followed the British standard).

I've checked a few, and they seem to match the colours used on my 1971 traveller.

I particularly like "Light green/ Red Fuel tank changeover switch to right-hand tank unit or entry and exit door closed switch to door actuator ".

Anyone out there got two tanks, or automatic doors on their Minor?

It largely holds up for things like minors, but very quickly fell out of use after that. There were just too many combinations needed to be able to standardise everything. The basics like black for earths, brown for unfused permanent, purple for fused permanent and so on tended to be stuck to, and black as earth is still used on some present day cars. This is at odds with others that used the german standard where brown is earth, and black ignition (or Kl15 as they like to call it).

I used to have a car called a Salamander.
It was a 1100cc Ford Kent engine with autobox fitted to Reliant Kitten chassis with body that looked like a cross between Postman Pat's van and the Popemobile.
Although facility disabled on my car that had automatic opening doors.
A little research found it was designed for disabled drivers hence the auto opening / closing doors for wheelchair users.
That might explain why there is actually a wiring colour code for such ?

Hello all,

lots of Jaguars have twin tanks with changeover switch.

Not cars but the UK has changed its electrical power cable colours to 'conform' to the continental colours, we use(d) red, yellow and blue for phase colours and black for neutral. Now we go to grey, brown and black with blue for neutral. Isn't that confusing when the two systems are mixed? Also on a similar vein, the U.K. colour coded fire extinguishers to differentiate between the different types. Now, following the continent again, they are all red with the type printed on them, which system is simpler and l;less likely to cause the wrong extinguisher to be used?
