Weak starts

Post by bopmachine »

Hello all. I recently fitted a alternator to my moggie and am now getting weak starts when cold (mornings). On one occasion I drained the battery trying to start. Any clues?

It sounds very much like your 'new' alternator is not charging the battery.

Did your car start OK when you were running with the dynamo?

If so, then your alternator is suspect (assuming all connections are tight).

Check to see if the fan belt is tight enough, and that the alternator has the correct size pulley.

Measure the voltage across the battery with the engine running and about 2000-2500 RPM, it should be about 14 volts, if it is reading 12 or lower then the alternator is suspect.

It is also worth checking the state of the battery if the alternator seems OK, as coincidences do sometimes happen!

Cam. :)
