Alternator conversion

Post by 8009STEVE »

Went to my local LSUK today as the red light was on. checked the volts at the battery. Ish.
Tried to tighten fan bet, but wrong one fitted, so they fitted a new (right) one. Still not the correct charge, so a new alternator was purchased( still to fit).
Lookin at the wireing, the technician said that the yellow wire from the alternator feed was not man enough to take 30 amps, so suggested a thicker wire from the second feed from the alternator to the live side of the starter soloniod in haevier wire. Even supplied the wire (FOC thank you).
Total cost?£43.90 inc vat

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

You would need to be runnng lots of equipment to draw 30 amps. But what volts was it showing before ?

That's not bad given it was brand new.
I got my 'current' alternator from a Fiesta mk3 for £20 - they still use V pulleys so they're a straight fit.

The standard cable is plenty man enough for the job.
I also fitted an extra wire in, same as you did, but it doesn't need it to function. Apparently it helps prevent voltage drop when starting and other things.
What would Macgyver do..?

Not Really.
2x100W H4 Main Headlamps, 2x100W Driving Lamps - There's 33A before using accessories.
But I'm guessing in the UK you probably don't need all of that lighting

Well - 100 watt lights are not legal on the highway in UK!! And really - 'driving lamps' are not needed either - modern 55watt headlights with good bulbs give very adequate lighting. Even 4 of them only adds up to 220W which at 14 volts is only 16 amps!!
