steering wheel vibrating

Post by rein »

When I put on the brakes at higher speed (starting at 50 MPH) my steering wheel used to vibrate.
I rotated the wheels (the front tyres are of a different brand and profile now) and the vibrating disappeard almost completely. I didn't realise that tyre profile can cause steering wheel vibrating under braking. Or is this a wrong conclusion?

Cheers,

Rein

Maybe swapping the wheels about re-located the brake drums more squarely.

My guess would be the tyres aren't at all well. The weight transfer to the front highlighted the problem, and on the rears they don't get quite the same loading so don't show the fault.

Try putting them back on the front and see if the problem comes back. If it does, think about replacing them asap.

This is not the case. In order to locate this vibrating problem I have taken off the front wheels and drum many times.

Our postings crossed.
In order to verify I will put them back. I can also put them on my van.

The condition of the tie bar bushes will have an effect on braking vibration - if they are worn out it can be useful to replace them.
If the vibration related to the tyres, and it comes back when those ones are on the fron't - I'd also recommend changing the tyres - Vibration is often an early sign of a tyre that is coming apart!! This can be very dangerous and does happen often on Minors as the tyres can sometimes be very old. On an old tyre there is a risk that damp has caused the internal steel reinforcng to corrode and fail!
