tuning

Post by steve4063 »

i have a gold 1098 which i thinkj is from a midget

just managed to get it started after a few months out of the car.

its now running very fast and i presume rich. i pulled the choke out to start and put it in within 1 minute and it still seemed to run quite quick.

does anyone know where the mixture adjustment is on them carbs.

also how do you use a timing light in detail i've had this one for years and have never actually used it.

i know u connetc a lead onto no 1 plug which is front or back of the engine i never know.

and the other lead to the spark plug lead you removed and shine the flashy light at the pulley at the bottom at them jagged bits but what happens then and how do u know what to do.

i will say it was a lovely feeling to get it running again after so long instead of just sitting behind them wheel going brmmm, and looking rather silly 8)

No 1 plug is normally nearest the fan/waterpump except on a Jag where it is furthest away

There should be a notch on the pully wheel that when ligned up with the timing marks should have No 1 Cylinder at TDC, paint some white paint on the mark on the pully and start the engine. Useing your timing light to get the white mark on your pully to line up the timing to your timing mark. It will only flash as the plug gets fired, so the idea is to get it to flash at the timing mark by making subtle adjustments to your dizzy either moving it clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Hope that helps and good luck

For the fast running - make sure the choke cable etc is releasing properly - going back to base. Same with throttle cable - make sure it's not too tight. What carb(s) have you got - single or twins ? You really need a Haynes book where all the carb adjutments are shown. But basically - idle speed is a little screw on the rhs - down for more revs and up for less. Idle mixture is a brass nut underneath - screw it upwards for weaker mix and down for richer mix. Both mix and idle speed need adjusting together - and only when the engine is fully warmed up. I would forget the timing light - it's a waste of time. You need to get the car on the road - then adjust the timing forwards until it pinks on a fair hill - then retard slightly until NO pinking. It's now set precisely at your engine's ideal setting. Any setting with a light is just guesswork!
