Gearbox steady wire

Replaced the broken gearbox steady wire, there is a thick washer that came of the old wire that fits on the gearbox side of the thread.

When I fitted the new cable with washer, the wire was slack with no tension in it. Is this correct

I removed the washer and refitted wire which, when tightened to limit just has
tension on wire.....

So which is it suposed to be.... with tension... or without....

Nice description! and can be achieved by noticing the gearbox just move and possibly backing off a couple of flats.

The 'official' BMC manual states:

'The cable should be tensioned so as just to prevent any forward movement of the power unit relative to the chassis. Care must be taken not to impose too great a tension or roughness will be felt with engine vibration.'
