Cheers all. Big up to SHBB for organising it. And the weather. Good to put a few faces to names on this message board.

Bit depressed today. Got home at 1am courtesy of two (very helpful) AA drivers and their trailers.
Somewhere near Tangmere on the A27 the exhaust broke off at the flange where it clamps to the manifold. 2nd time that has happened, the last being back in January this year. The new exhaust had lasted a mere 675 miles. It has not happened previously in 21 years & 50,000 miles. Is the quality of mild steel exhausts not what it used to be?

Onwards & upwards....

Last time it was a rough-ish break on an exhaust that was about 2 yrs old. This time, as far as I can see, the break is clean around the circumference of the pipe where the flange meets it. I will know for sure when I take the clamp off tonight. It came from a reputable trader in the south of England, so hopefully it will be guaranteed.

I know it's not an uncommon fault, but is it perhaps getting more common? Maybe there's a faulty batch out there???

The weather was so much nicer than the last time I was in Brighton that I'm quite ashamed to say I didn't stay on Madeira Drive for very long. Did manage some time to get a few photos, however.

Exhaust breaking at the manifold - I had it a lot on one car (over a long period) and it was mainly down to bad vibrations. Most of the time it would just shake loose at the manifold, but sometimes if i had managed to get it well secured it would break. To improve the exhaust life I made an extra mounting from the gearbox flange across to the exhaust nearby where it leaves the engine bay.
If the engine/gearbox is vibrating too much then this puts an extreme load on the manifold joint - the highest stresses are where the flare meets the straight pipe.

If however you've just got a rear mounting on the exhaust and and no others, this allows the exhaust to swing around, and that on its own will put a lot of stress on the manifold. The exhaust needs 2 mountings as a minimum, but 3 is better.
