And "front" and "back" depend on which way you're travelling, so maybe bow and stern are more appropriate?

Imagine ringing $dealername: "I need a port bow brake cylinder." :-)

... which is different depending on whether you're sat in the driver's seat or looking at the front of the vehicle.
Exactly!!!! :D

Reading the restoration and workshop manuals can get very confusing until you start to know your way around! :o

As JimK said, 'nearside' IS nearest the kerb whatever side of the road you drive on. It's not (apparently) used much elsewhere, because it's confusing. P'raps the stage manner should be adopted - 'car left' and 'car right' :D

I know it is confusing, as I used to order parts when I was still in Holland.

So I did indeed often get the wrong sides.

Rule of thumb, when you sit in the car, facing forward, is the way top determine the left and right hand side of the car.

In holland I always sat on the neaside btw, when drivving, just to confuse you all!

I confess I have a problem with Left and Right.

When I left school and went to work I studied Biology and spent years dissecting various dead animals. As all good doctors know Left is the bodies left not yours so the right hand side is on your left and the left hand side is on your right unless you are looking at the back of the body when the right is on the right and the left is on the left!! The same applies to cars I'm sure that makes it clearer!!!! :o

I had a big smash-up on my motorcycle 10 years ago (which incidentally is why I bought a minor - just as much fun but safer). When I was in hospital having the screws removed from my leg I came out of theatre with my left leg shaved and dressings on my right leg. I suspect the nurse was told to shave the left leg and she shaved the one on her left, fortunately the doctor knew his right from his left and found the screws first time!
