Ok, I know there's been previous discussion regarding the need for the steady cable, but:-
I was underneath today, doing a general service, and thought "I'll just change that frayed old cable for a new one"!
As I unscrewed the gearbox end the threaded boss came away from the mounting plate - it appears to have been welded on (poorly).
I've got a replacement on order, but the question is this:
Will I have oil leaking out of the back of the gearbox? The plate is still on, bit I don't know if it has a hole through it.
Any offers?
Cheers,
Colin

You are quite right. Unfortunately I was taking the car on the Welsh classic car run and was pressed for time. I couldn't put the old one back on because it only had two strands left unbroken

First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

Well, my new cable is fine - (threads and all). Mid you, I do use the copper grease on the threads.
Like Iddy, the old one had jsut a couple of strands left....
When I get the replacement mounting, I'll have the old plate and threaded boss "spare" - just needs welding (properly).
Anyone out there wanting to have the bits?
There will ne a delay until I fit the new one as we're off to BMCEcosse Land for a short holiday (by train)..
