Engine Identification

Hello everybody, new member Billy here. Could anyone please tell me which engine I have in my 1972 Morris Minor Van (Albert) I bet you want a clue dont you? The engine number starts with; 10V/189E/L etc etc. Could you also tell me if thats the low compression engine and if it is, should I have a high compression engine in it? Thanks nicely, Billy (I wish I, and my Van, could get up hill's easier) Gibbons.

is a late 1098, and indeed low compression.

should get you up hills easy enough though, with the LCV diff

Wow, that was a quick reply! Thanks for the info. I forgot to say that before I bought the Van, someone had fitted a 1968 saloon diff in. But now I know which engine I have I can order bits for it with the people on the other end of the phone thinking Im not totally thick when they ask what engine Ive got! Thanks again, Billy

that explains why your van won't be as quick off the the line as the original ones!

You have a 4.22:1 diff, in stead of a 4.55:1 diff

Means you do less revs at the same speed.

And I always forget this, welcome to the board!

Wow, that was a quick reply! Thanks for that. I forgot to say that before I bought the van, someone had put in a diff from a 1968 saloon. Thanks for the info, now I can order parts on the phone without the person on the other end thinking I'm totally thick when they ask what engine I've got in it and me saying"I dont know". Most of the engine bits you are likely to be needing are all the same anyway!! Best bet for more power would be a better cylinder head - which could be skimmed down to raise the compression ratio and help it to fly up the hills ! Don't despair with that diff - unless you are aiming to lug great heavy loads (which is what the van was designed for) then the diff you have will be fine for general running around - and should help the mpg too.

BILLY...the difference between the low and high compression engines is
in the amount of dish in the pistons so quite easy to upgrade to high compression. (not very high by todays standards,only 8.5-1).
