I am a very regular visitor to the lovely island of Malta and have some friends there of over 25 years standing. Malta as you know until then last few years was a haven of what we call "old cars", Moggies by the dozens.
I have access to three on a take away basis .
Do you know anyone who has brought an old car from the Island to the UK and the paperwork needed and pit falls that are there please?
Ken. Wakefield.
Moggie from Malta.

I thought there was a problem with exporting cars from Malta which is why there are so many classics still in use over there, we do have a poster from Malta on here so maybe Frank will have some input.

I don't know anyone who has but it should be relatively easy now that Malta is in the EC. There is no question of duty/VAT if it is a private sale. In theory if the car has a current Maltese registration and MOT (equivalent) it can be driven in the UK for six months before you have to register it. To do that it should just be a case of getting it registered at your nearest VRO.
It would be possible to drive back to the UK as there is a motor ferry to Sicily (or at least there was in 2000 when I went there). That would be an adventure in a sidevalve or series II.

Hello and thanks for the replies. I am realy only interested in one but it is a hell of a drive to the UK so my thoughts were to trailer it somehow.
I have just retired and my wife joins me soon . I am working on her to retire in Gozo or Malta but the grand kids are a problem !!!!!
Thanks and I will keep a watch for further advice.

Hi, sorry late on replying, saw the post, so today went to the ADT, a very unreliable and inefficient transport athority, anyway I asked about exporting, they told me since we're in the EU all you need to do is buy the car, do the transfer on the logbook in Malta, and then proceed as normal ship the car to the UK and see what stuff you need to do to put it on the road there. hope this was of use
