tappet chest covers?
whats the best way to change the gaskets on them and change them? so that they seal properly. do i need to use a compound sealer?

Its only 1 bolt- although one of them has the breather on there. Just unbolt and change the gaskets- you can get new rubber gaskets for these. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean and the rubber is correctly seated and don't over tighten as the torque value is quite low for these.

i think this is my problem, its leaking a bit and the fan and air from driving blows the oil back onto the inlet manifold and exhaust fitting and burns and smells

But the tappet chest covers are below the manifold- I would change the rocker cover gasket first as this is more likely your source of leak!

yeah i think i am going to change the rocker cover gasket as well as the manifold gaskets.

Two types of tappet chest covers - early ones use cork gasket, and later ones use rubber gasket. I'm not sure if the early covers can take the rubber gaskets - probably can. Best to stick the gaskets to the cover with a little sealant - but none on the block face. This way - they can be used over and over. Same applies to rocker cover gasket - stick it to the cover, no sealant on the head side.
