problem. help please.

I changed the carb-->to manifold gaskets today and all the gaskets on the spacer. I still am having a bit of leak by/oil running down onto the manifold and causing a burning oil smell. what else can i do to fix this,

Change the cork rocker cover gasket or at least ensure that you can feel that it is level with the metal edge of the rocker cover ALL the way round as it can move inwards as you refit it thus causing an oil leak.

You have to find where it's coming from! It won't be coming rom the carb. But it (the carb) may be leaking fuel -which evaporates and leaves behind a 'varnish'.

yeah it looks like a varnish on the manifold, very black like.

You should be able to tell from the smell it makes when it's burning off whether it's petrol or oil.

That's a good point - oil will smoke, petrol just evaporates.

yeah it smokes from the manifold, so must be oil.

As Willie says, almost certainly the rocker box gasket. If the box has ever been overtightened (usually to try and eliminate a leak...) then it warps and is a nightmare to ever get sealed properly again.

The cork gasket can deform and not seal if the box has been taken off for any reason, and it also goes hard over time. I find cleaning the groove in the rocker box out, smearing some grease in to act as a glue of sorts, and fitting a new (always mishaped from poor packaging methods) cork gasket sorts the probelm nearly every time. Just don't tighten it right up!

how tight do you need to go on them? we are talking about the 2 panels on the side under the manifold right with the center bolts?

Hi Ben

No - the Rocker Cover is the top of the engine, the side panels are called "Tappet Chest Covers" If you're not sure replace all 3 gaskets. All of these should be tightened to 4 lb ft.

There are many manuals for sale cheap on Ebay. You will learn a lot more and save yourself a lot of time and grief if you buy one.

Glue the new gasket to the rocker cover - but not to the cylinder head. that way it can be used over and over. The tappet chests are below the manifold - so can't put oil on the manifold.
