midget or marina engine

Post by smb »

hello, as some of you may have noticed i,ve put, what i believed to be, 1275 midget& box up for sale. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1

I bought it in good faith a few years ago from a bloke who had a 1500 midget, spares, parts etc in his garage. i did some research and though because the area on the head/tap to the heater suggest its a midget cos of the angle. In addition the engine number is . 12G 1398, the 12g meaning 1275 MG mk1. 12V represents the morris marina 1275 as this site suggets http://www.ime.org.uk/ime/e/BMC_MG_&_Mo ... _Codes.pdf.

I feel i'm missleading a few e-bayers at present  and would appreciate any information, thanks. scott.

Hi Scott cant say about the box but the engine is not a midget as the oil filter would be the same position as the minor, its either a Marina or Ital, an Ital engine will have a ribbed block and the dizzy will be held in with a fork type of fixing, if it has a clamp like a mnior its a Marina.
The midget engines tend to make a bit more money I hope you didnt pay too much at the time.
Cheers

Looks like early Marina - and that's a dynamo on there, not an alternator. If it wasn't so far away I would certainly be interested!

It is a bit odd - maybe the original engine number from the midget was transferred to this engine when it was fitted as replacement - do the rivets look 'disturbed' ?

That's just a casting part number - not the engine number - which is the little metal strip held on with the two rivets.

Engine is definitely Marina/Ital, but the gearbox may not be the 1275 version. I THINK they all had a reverse light switch up by the gear lever?

Also is it the close ratio version that is fitted to all Spridgets, except the original, early Frogeyes?
