Dash!

I have the honour of having managed to drive 30 miles with no oil in my dashpot.

after I had fitted a HIF44 and home made air filter casing to my 1275 lump. (it ran Ok as long as you wanted tickover or full throttle.

)
Anyway, now I've put oil in the dashpot, Joe started, ran for about 5 seconds and then died, never to start again.

Any ideas????

Remove the oil ?? Seriously - check the piston can rise and fall ok - take the little piston out and try to start it. Is it maybe just flooded ?

Here's a detail of the side of the carb facing the bulkhead

I suspect the breather is fitted to the fuel overflow?? The bare pipe shown (?) was much too small to clamp the crankcase breather to - hence my decision to fit it to the other.

BMC the piston lifter does it's job OK

I have also tried the following:
removing the crankcase breather and blanking the two pipes.

take the little piston out

I think he means the damper rod - The bit that you unscrew to put the oil in.

If it worked before you put oil in, then maybe it's now running way too rich as the piston is being damped properly?

All I do know is that it is just the other way round than on the HS2. So in is richer, out is leaner. I think.

I'm most used to these on Minis (where I go by feel), so...

Leaning over the engine from the dizzy side, the mixture screw is recessed in the rear left corner of the carb. Needs a stubby to get at on a Mini, but should be quite easy to spot and tweak on a Minor

It works a little pivot affair on the jet, so as Onne says, it's in for rich and out for weak.

The best thing to do is probably to pop the carb top, and wind the jet up to flush with the bearing (the outer ring you can see). Then take it down a fraction, so it's maybe half a mm or so below the outer bit. Should get the engine running, though it'll probably need a bit of choke till warm, then you can do the usual back and forth till you hit the right spot, just like HS carbs

Is that on the cable mounting side or as shown in the photo?
Is it the boss in the photo shown between the fuel line clamp and the pipe with the '?'

From memory, it really is on the corner - so not visible in the pic.

If you take your air filter off and look straight at the carb from the left side of the car you should be able to see it - It's a cross headed screw recessed into the lower carb body.

Found it!

What an awkward place to put it!!

OK, i got the engine running before family matters took over. i'll let you know if I get him set up properly but he did seem to run very nicely with just a little tweak.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can someone tell me what is the right way to connect all these carb pipes? Joe is running, but not all that sweetly, and I don't want to cause any avoidable damage.

From memory as I can't find my spare HIF body.

Lowermost pipe - Fuel in
Pipe almost directly above it - Fuel breather/ vent
Pipe nearest the inlet manifold - Engine breather

I misread the labels in your pic before, if you've put the crank breather on the pipe above the fuel inlet (which it looks like) then you're getting positive pressure from the engine going into the float chamber, while air and some petrol vapour will be wanting to come out of there. So too much pressure in the float chamber, especially once doing a few revs!

Thanks packedup. Since i posted the photo I have removed that breather pipe and put it where you suggested and as mentioned the car now runs. the only thing i found odd was the difference between the size of the breather and the carb pipe - which is much smaller. I guess the only thing I need to do now is to get Joe on a rolling road.
