Another rust question...

Post by Mike Shipman »

Ive read the recent thread regarding rust and Im afraid Im still confused :o (which will come as no surprise to SADMOGers...)

Ive got some surface rust in the floor of my Traveller ( and a scrape on one of my wheelarches - but one thing at a time), I will (eventually) wire brush this off then treat the metal - and this is where my confusion starts...
Firstly - regarding initial treatment aand primimg,
Ive seen reference to rust converters and acids - should this be the first application? which one does what job? should I be wary of compatabilitywith following applications of primer / paint?

Then, do I use a primer :-? ...?
if so Ive seen the following mentioned:
Red Oxide primer
Zinc rich primer
and Etch Primer
...which is best to use for what ?, is more than one needed?, are any of these incompatible with paint?

Then having primed - do you require any sort of undercoat ?, or is it straight to the paint finish?

If straight to the paint - how many coats? - do I use a straight forward aerosol(Ive heard of cellulose and 2 pack...)??

Hence my confusion

I'd be grateful for any advice....!!

Regards, Mike.

Aerosols are usually Cellulose (if you get them from BM or ESM etc), you can use either red-oxide or zinc rich primer, then etch primer, followed by cellulose primer then top coat.

The finish will only last as well as the rust removal- so be as ruthless as you can with removing the rust- use a rust dissolver (Jenolite or the Milkstone remover), after wire brush on grinder (or grinding /abrasive disk).
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Thanks for that John, I'll let you know how it turns out when I (eventually!!) get round to doing it. :)
