I also take off my wedding ring - same reason.
It also comes off for most DIY and rock climbing (not tht Ive done any for ages).

Basically it's off with the ring(s), jewellery, watch. loose clothing (including your tie - even if it's just a peek inside the bonnet) and tie up the long hair.
anything that can get trapped will....
