Have seen them - but not bought - in Macro. The ramps I fancy are the big ones on garage forecourts - where the car is driven up and then it tips forward, support pillars are then swung down and locked in place at the rear. Lifts the car about 18" off the ground - would be very handy !

In the local Halfords here too. You probably made the error of asking one of the assistants...

Hello BmcE,

have you seen the price of them? 5 to 700 pounds.
I have built something similar recently using 50 x 3 and 25 x 3 angle, even then the steel cost was a 100 pounds plus the best part of a box of rods.

I had a cheap pair for years that just bend when I drove my XJ6 up them !
I lashed out on a decent set and they have lasted nearly 15 years so it was worth paying the extra.
They are long so even modern low slung cars don't scrape when driving up.
A friend had a pair that the actual ramp was too steep and damaged his plastic bumper so he gave them to me.
Very useful as the sloping part is detachable so you are left with just the wheel platform.
I've never seen another set like them even though with most cars you have to lift with tolley jack as too steep ramp to drive up.

I remember those when new in 1970's. Were quite expensive and certainly out of my price range at the time.
You got a bargain as I saw a pair in good condition fetch serious money on eBay - still out of my price range :-( .

Thanks for the responses folks - next time I need somthing at Halfords, I'll ask their staff to check on this site to see if they stock an item  .

Thanks for the offer Carlo - I dont need them at the moment - I was planning to get a pair for general use in the future, I may give you a shout at whatever point I do if I dont get a pair in the meantime.

Thanks, Mike.

To Alec - well done building the BIG ramps!! Trouble is my missus (and the neighbours) would just possibly complain about them blocking up the driveway!!

I to am in dorset and have a a pair you can borrow.
Never know them to be hard to get hold of... I was given mine by an older guy who'd given up on the old DIY mechanics years ago.
What would Macgyver do..?
