Pornography

Post by 57traveller »

I've had a message that adminitrators only can post on the website section but -
On two occassions now ONLY when on the MMOC message board I've had a "LIVE Girls" link posted on my toolbar and an icon on my desktop and I presume the relevant software downloaded. Has anyone else experienced this.
The Administrator may like to comment.

Yes, there has been mention of this in the past.

It is not to do with the MMOC website, but more to do with your PC.

I would ask the other users of your PC about this, as to have the software on your desktop and toolbar someone has clicked a 'yes' when a 'no' should have been selected! As to the reason that it appeared in the first place..............you need to speak to them.

Unfortunately some websites grab your IP address and so keep bombarding you with pop-up messages. If you have broadband (like me) then it is really irritating as you keep your IP address for a long time (so more chances of pop-ups appearing), whereas on dial-up it changes every time you connect.

If you're having trouble with messages or popups appearing on your computer (does the name "Janita" ring a bell?) and you're running XP, then maybe I can help.

Go to control panel/ performance and maintenance/ administrative tools/ services.

When that loads looks for the entry "Messenger" in the right hand window. Double click on it and click on the "Stop" button. Then go to the line above and change "Automatic" to "Disabled". Then click on "OK" and close the "Services" proggy.

This is NOT MSN Messenger but a method used to broadcast messages accross a network. Therefore it can in most circumstances be disabled.

A lot of unscrupulous people know of this and use it for advertising.

This may help some of your popups, but as to how that link got on your desktop, I'm flabbergasted.

Also, make sure you haven't got any spyware on your system you could try running a program called Spywasher, or Ad-aware. Do a google, and that might help.

Good luck!

I'll guarantee that the MMOC site has nothing to do with this. I've got a programme called 'Zone Alarm' which monitors all Internet traffic. It stops anything dowloading until I accept the action - and I've never had a warning while using the website.

Pop-ups are always a pain - however there are programmes available which allow you to reject most pop-ups.

Thanks for replies.
However I am the only user of the p.c. and I DEFINITELY DID NOT click a "yes" to anything. On this occassion, whatever it was disabled my firewall. The only way I could enable my firewall again was to uninstall the "live girls_gb" stuff and carry out a system restore.
It must be a coincidence that I was using the message board both times.
I realised after posting my first message that it was different the first time - "gb girls" or similar.
Spooky.

After performing the above, I still get some popups (Internet Washer, for one) but the really irritating messenger ones are gone.

It probably won't work on Win98 - that's just an updated version of Win95, and I couldn't do it on my old steam-powered desktop... You might try one of the free popup blockers available on the internet. Have a look at TuCows.com or another shareware site. They seem to work, although popups from other sites, like Email providers, or links from this site, may be blocked unless the program is set up correctly.

Here's a tip:
If you get any popups, click on the x in the corner, and not on OK. If you get any unwanted emails - do not click on Unsubscribe - just delete the mail, without opening it if you can. If you click on unsubscribe, then they know that their mail has been read and got a reply. You're likely to get more, then, so don't do it.

57, what was the Firewall? I've heard that ZoneAlarm is only any good for peace-of-mind, as it can be bypassed... WinXP has a built-in Firewall, which I've activated on mine, although it probably doesn't work as well as ZA! If you're on broadband, a Hardware router (Netgear box sorta thing) can help stop unwanted nasties, but I'm still on dial-up, so can't really comment.

I haven't had anything like that appear on my computer (and I use it far too much!!), but I shall keep an eye out. Disabling firewalls is just naughty, but it shouldn't be a problem... You may have been using the messageboard at both times, but where had you been before? I'm not being funny, but if you've checked emails (as above) or have been to sites you don't normally use (you don't use KaZaA, do you?) then that could be an explanation.

I use Ontrack SysteSuite anti virus etc. and Ontrack Netdefence (I've spelt this the correct way and not with an "s" as they do!) Firewall and Windows XP Professional.
It WAS probably just a coincidence with the message board. I have in fact just received an e-mail from the owner of a site I use frequently and possibly just prior to MMOC site yesterday, I'll check my web history,(NO not one of those sites  ) his server has been "compromised" so just maybe??

Sounds like you've found the cause - especially if the links have been for the same dubious site (albeit with slightly different names).

Glad the problem's solved now. Make sure that your AV is updated, while your on this track. Can firewalls be updated with log files, or something? Might be another thing to check.

Oh, and congrats on the 100 posts.

100 posts, I hadn't noticed, doesn't time fly etc.
Yes Gareth, I download virus updates from Ontrack (now vcom) very regularly and run a thorough virus scan on my p.c. at the very most once per week.
I must consult my p.c. guru re the firewall. I have noticed that the original naughty site is listed and blocked but the second (yesterdays) is not. I suspect this may have something to do with the disabled firewall.
And yes I was on the "compromised" site prior to MMOC. My apologies if my initial post sounded as though I was blaming MMOC

No I dont think anyone though that as its an issue that has appeared once before, and if you had not Gareth  may not have given us all a very good fix for a similar problem.
Cheers
