Les
Is that your mini in the attached picture? Looks very interesting. The only competition mini I have ever driven was a really light weight 1293cc sprinter with rear beam axle and limited slip diff. Forget about the back end just point it where you wanted to go, press the loud pedal and hang on!

Re: Damper
If you do buy a S/H damper make sure that the rubber is not perished!
And YES I would fit a damper to the crankshaft. It does help preserve the crankshaft.
I agree with bmcecosse do not pay 90 pounds for a damper.

Re: Horopito Wreckers, New Zealand
We used to have but nearly all cleaned up in the name of enviromentalisam (hope that I spelt that right). Does anybody remember Harry Buckland's scrap yard on the B4063 between Cheltenham & Gloucester in the 1960s. It was a car enthusiasts dream. At the front were the remains of very old cars so...

Re: Problems with refitting 948/1098 style oil cannister
Lambrettalad & Trickdicky The filters you quote are they longer than the normal spin on canister filter fitted to 'A' Series with the spin on convertion? If you read my earlier quote you will see that the filter I have fitted to my Minor is 13cm long from the sealing face. The whole idea is to g...

Re: BMC Special Tuning
Les Glad you can make use of the link. I have got couple of original BMC Special Tuning pamphlets for the Sprite/Midget (948/1098/1275). I just wish the prices quoted were current. I went to the BMC Special Tuning Departments closing down sale at Abingdon hoping to bag a bargain but even arriving ju...

When you are saving to purchase your first house you will do anything to save money and at that time interest rates were 17 & 1/2 percent so maximising your deposit was the first priority. And yes I did have a leather A--e developed from many years of cycling. Would think nothing of doing 160 mi...

Regarding the magnetic drain plug - As they say in the supermarket advert 'Every Little Helps'.
Re: mopeds
In my late teens I purchased a nearly new Clark Scamp for 25 pounds. You could not get anything more basic but I used to ride it everywhere. Living in the Cotswolds it had to put up with some serious hills but it would climb them all admittedly very slowly but it got me everywhere I needed to go and...

Re: Problems with refitting 948/1098 style oil cannister
Katy Hi I have just been and checked the number of the filter fitted to my Minor and it states on the filter casing FRAM 5210. It does not have to be a FRAM filter but any make of filter so long as it is bigger than the small canister filter reccomended for the canister filter head conversion. Check...

Re: Problems with refitting 948/1098 style oil cannister
When I worked in the BMC garage I used to find that Duckhams 20/50 produced lots of mayo in the rocker covers of 'A' Series engines. Change to Castrol 20/50 and the problem went away! So engines producing Mayo cannot always be considered to be running cool. As regards keeping the inside of the petro...

Re: Problems with refitting 948/1098 style oil cannister
I have just stripped a late MG midget 1275cc engine for rebuild and it was fitted with a canister filter and a raiser block between the engine block and filter head. I assume the raiser block was to allow the filter to clear the chassis leg. Earlier 1275 midget blocks appear to have the 'proper' fil...

Can you confirm the measurements because if you take it as read you have cam lobes of 13.5 inches. I do not know about wear they seem to have grown.

Re: Problems with refitting 948/1098 style oil cannister
If you decide to fit the screw on canister oil filter head you can if you want to use the longer (13cm) Ford screw on oil filter i.e. FRAM Part No: PH5210. The more filter the more crud it will catch. To compliment the oil filter use the ESM magnetic oil sump drain plug Part No: 10M247A.

Re: Too much pressure?
Idealy when fitting a new oil pressure relief valve it should be lightly lapped in. Great care should be taken to ensure that the lapping paste DOES NOT get into the oil ways. BMC reccommended using Oil Pump Relief Valve Grinding Tool Pt No: 18G69 specificaly for the lapping of the relief valve but ...

Re: Too much pressure?
If you are determined to cut the spring make sure that it is the remaining correctly formed end that sits on the ball bearing and the cut end sits inside the cap.

Re: Too much pressure?
When using the ball bearing instead of the standard plunger (Pt No: 12H865) you should use shorter and stronger spring (Pt No: AEA536) which has a free length of 66mm. Original oil pressure relief valve spring (Pt No: 6K853) has a free length of 73mm and is much weaker. If finer control of the max o...
