Re: Starter Bendix sticks
I may have found the reason for the ever sticking Bendix: namely the Washer , having been fitted by me, seperating the Bendix from the main spring, being only made from mild steel with the effect that it cold welds itself to the Bendix when he is thrown back to the spring. The part does not seem to ...

Re: compression too high:pinging?
Bought this refurbished engine 5 years ago and the compression was always 11½bar on some of the cylinders. Wether the head had ever been skimmed I can not say. But judging from the valve stem oil seals, it seems to be a Mini head, maybe that explains it. Seems to me that a value exceeding 12bar woul...

Re: compression too high:pinging?
Eventually I decided to behead the engine, cleaned piston tops, combustion chambers, valves and reground the valves. After refitting I could bring the ignition timing back to -7° without audible knocking and the >12 bar compression values are back to 11½. So it seems this is settled then. Now back t...

Re: compression too high:pinging?
Thank you BMCEcosse!
Everything seems to be working, the vacuum unit does move the baseplate, it just worried me that the pinging commenced only recently and that something might be brewing.
I probably have to wait and hear.

compression too high:pinging?
Would anyone have a suggestion why the compression has increased on my 1098cc engine lately? At the same time I have noticed 'pinging/knocking' when climbing so I had to retard the ignition timing. It used to be -7° but now it is more like -4°. Could those two things be related and how can I remedy ...

Re: Starter Bendix sticks
Never oiled or greased any parts after cleaning them. Used graphite dust once - didn't increase the interval of failure. Like I said before, I couldn't notice much dirt on any parts nor a bent driving shaft. I will try the teflon next time it happens again; thank you very much for the suggestions! W...

Starter Bendix sticks
On my Lucas M35G starter motor [1098 std. engine ] the barrel&pinion/'Bendix' part repeatedly becomes stuck to the big spring washer on the driving shaft of the starter and won't move. I only get that whirring sound when trying to start the engine. A light tap with a hammer usually solves the pr...

Re: contact breaker gap setting/Dwell Angle
I have measured the Dwell Angle by temporarily fitting an ordinary circular angle meter/ruler from primary school times on top of the distributors' rotary arm. Turning the engine over I mark the point when the points close [ indicated by a lamp p.e.] It is this time the coil begins to be charged wit...

Welding & hidden Flames
When doing some welding on the car floor, how can I avoid the development of fire inside hollow spaces, like the door sills , having been treated with Waxoyl or so before , possibly burning up the whole car?

Head Gasket: good or bad Quality?
3000 miles ago, the bypass hose on my 10MA engine gave up its ghost, I decided to renew the cylinder head gasket as well. Now, the engine spits out a pint of water out of the radiator overflow after only a very short trip, and white smohe is coming out of the exhaust pipe. So I replaced the head gas...

Well, chucked out the fuel filter: full of that strange red muck [feels like fine ground brickstone, wondering what it is]. What eventually made all the difference were the spark plugs: 2 were wet-ish. Cleaned and blowed them out: Car runs like mad whole this week. Hope, it stays like this , at leas...

Thank you for all your help and comments. In the last 3 months car's been driven 2000 miles. The bloke I purchased it from, told me ordinary unleaded fuel [Euro 95 it's called at my place] would be all right. I don't believe this, so I add this Lead Replacement stuff 1:1000 Major improvements were: ...

won't accelerate
I am the proud - but unlucky - owner of a 1968 M M 1000 Traveller with a 10MA-U-H engine, that won't run well since a couple of days: starts normally then after about 1 mile I can't accelerate any more:engine doesn't respond to the throttle [though the throttle moves]. I then pull over, let the engi...
