Just wondering if there is a clue in the red colour of the muck. Would that indicate the use of an additive for a leaded head? If you haven't been using the additive, that could damage the valves/valve seats. I gather from other members that the engine is quite tolerant of not having additive, but l...

Yes I remember trying that last time, its memory seems to decay over time.

You need to keep your wits about you when the phone rings too, I've burnt both ears that way.

Car is tucked up for the night and I've got a hot date with an ironing board right now but I will have a look at the dist cap tomorrow. It's a new cap but it did have the floppy old rotor arm whizzing around under it for about 20 miles so this is good advice I think.

If you put the Bridgestone contact details up here Dale we could all have a go. I certainly would.

Just been through a similar experience. I take it you've checked the (ignition) points? The only things I would add to your list are possible faulty coil, possible faulty rotor arm, and check that the dashpot damper (the knurled knob atop your carb's suction dome) is OK and has the right oil in its ...

forgetful server again

Site seems to be 'forgetting' me again, as it did a few weeks back for me and plenty others, I think the solution then was some kind of reboot?

You have still got Grand Prix S?? PLEASE where can I get some? 24 PSI all round seems to suit them Previous owner Mark tells me they are scarily old! Wish I'd never asked now, I feel like I should be changing them, but they are so nice looking. Proper rich black rubber, just like tyres used to be. ...

Yes I think that is very good advice. When I get one I may well put it on in place of the leccy one just to see the difference for myself (if there is one!).

Who knows really, it's not perfect, but then it is a 40 year old car – and mine's one of the young whippersnappers at that! Thanks Roy, your help was invaluable.

This tale is being told on a parallel separate thread (sorry to the webmasters) but for those who haven't seen that (and are interested!) I've just been out again with all the new bits and it is a lot better. Last things I did today were to (a) check fuel pump points (they looked ok but gave them a ...

Well, I've just been out again with all the new bits and it is a lot better. Last things I did today were to (a) check fuel pump points (they looked ok but gave them a light twiddle with a very fine bit of wet and dry anyway), (b) take out sagging double-thickness underbonnet insulation and re-stick...

Already on when I bought the car. I'll ask Mark the previous owner where he got them from. He's up in Lancs.

Just fitted a brand new rotor arm which has exactly the same chip out of the plastic so must assume this is a design thing. Anyway, that's another thing eliminated. Have had a look at petrol pump contact points, no sign of corrosion there, spring blade and springs on rocker ass'y seem OK, only bit o...

I see what you mean about the elec ignition. Luckily the local motor factor did have a new rotor arm, so I'm putting that in now and will go for a quick test run.
