Re: Car dies - backfire through carb!
I would definitely recommend checking the value clearances even if it is sounding better. I had one that didn't have any clearance and it burnt out an inlet valve. Then it really did run on three cylinders and that required me to learn about removing the head and grinding valves which was new experi...

Thanks, Mike and Alec.
That was my feeling, but I'm always glad to have some agreement from the forum

Does the water pump really need to be serviced?
Hello everybody and Happy New Year to you all. I know that many of you have strong views about using the Haynes manual, but I still like to use it as one of my sources alongside the workshop manual and this forum. The Haynes manual suggests "lubricating the water pump sparingly with grease"...

Re: Minor Medics, Milton Keynes
Funny enough, got a call from Stephen just after I posted this. I guess the new business didn't take off as he now has a "proper" job. So in answer to the original question - it seems as if Minor Medics is definitely dead.

Re: Minor Medics, Milton Keynes
Bert Draper decided to retire about a year ago, I think. Business was slowing down and Stephen and Bert could no longer justify the rent. However, Stephen told me a few months later that he was going to give it a go as a mobile minor mechanic. I left a message with him just yesterday as it happens a...

Re: Problem with ignition system?
*edit* - wrote this before I saw the second page. Doh!... I think that I will definitely add the clearance check to my annual service check list. Am I right in saying that the exhaust value is the front valve of the two for each cylinder? Forgive my ignorance, I have not delved inside the engine bef...

Re: Problem with ignition system?
Thanks MarkyB. That's exactly what I thought when I saw the numbers - "that difference could have been detected with the thumb method" :) There was certainly no chance at all of even getting the feeler gauge part way in, but I must admit I didn't look to see if there was any gap. I do have...

Re: Problem with ignition system?
So after a manic week, running around after various family members, I finally got some time to have another look and, just in time, my compression gauge turned up yesterday. First of all, I checked all the valve clearances. All were good except number three, which of course if for cylinder two - the...

Re: Problem with ignition system?
Thanks for the compression tips, people. Hopefully I find some time tomorrow to try them out (and to try using new spark plugs, just in case they are knackered). Also ordered some bits, such as a new condenser and the LT lead from the dizzy case to the points - mine is looking a bit "thin"...

Re: Problem with ignition system?
Thanks for the suggestions. Roy, I didn't mention it, but I had cleaned up all the spark plugs. MarkyB, I pulled each lead in turn from the spark plug and I could see a good clean spark on all plugs. I also tried Kennatt's trick of running the car with the number two spark plug out and, yes, I could...

Problem with ignition system?
Hello all, My poor Moggie doesn't sound very happy. It appears to be only firing on three cylinders. With the car running, I can remove each HT lead in turn. This makes the engine run worse for each plug except number two. This same plug is also the muckiest where the others look in good condition. ...

Re: Removing wheel bearings from hub
I spent the evening with my mechanic friend. We are sure that the bearings are in the right way round. We went over everything again. The conclusion is that the bearings are sound but there may be a small amount of wear, perhaps on the hub shoulders, that is giving a small amount of play. My mechani...

Re: Rear oil seals
I have only posted pictures of the front hub on my other active thread. The oil seal on the rear hub was indeed the other way round (and a
to get in place).

Re: Removing wheel bearings from hub
It's the weekend and I'm back on the car, trying to find out why there is play in the front hub. First thing to rule out - are the bearings the right way round? The wider part of the inner race of both bearings is visible when the bearings are in the hub assembly. Is this the correct way round? [fra...

Re: Rear oil seals
Thanks for the warning Roy. I hope I haven't knackered the new bearing already
Maybe, I'll refit a brand new bearing before I put it all back together. That will allow me to examine the almost new bearing in good light at my leisure.

Re: Rear oil seals
Thanks for that Les, I was on the right track, but I wanted to be sure. When I started this I had a devil of a job removing the hub from the axle casing. Now when I try to get the hub back onto the axle casing, I discover that the last centimetre or so is very difficult. So much so that if I'm not c...

Re: Rear oil seals
Hello All, Does it matter which way round the rear bearings are fitted into the hub? Also, can anybody remember, does the rear bearing fit flush with the outside of the hub or should it be recessed? I have the bearing in flush, but can't remember whether I should still be hitting it to get it in fur...

Re: Removing wheel bearings from hub
Thanks for the clarification. I think that the confusion came about because I did not fully understand exactly how the hub, spacer and thrust bearings work together. I'm learning all this as I go along. Now I'm starting to doubt myself. Just to make absolutely sure I have the bearings on the correct...
