Re: 1098 Ribbed Gearbox Remote not operating correcty
Is it the correct gearstick? That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the heading of your post. However, I am 99.9% certain that you have the correct gearstick. Have you tried slightly loosening off the plate that holds the gearstick in place? If that reduces the binding, then you will ...

Re: Rear Damper Link
Whatever oil you choose, do not fill the damper to the very top--there must be an air gap (as per the workshop manual). The leaks after refilling are probably more often than not due to overfilling rather than the choice of oil.

Re: Wiring to indicators and trafficator works from the same column switch
I am pretty sure that there are previous discussions on how to do this on here.would it be possible to still control them via the indicator stalk, but have a switch to disable them when on motorways etc?

Muffler heat shield
Has anyone tried using the heat shield without the insulating pad inside? I am restoring a '68 van and it appears to have the original insulating material inside--which might be the dreaded asbestos. I am thinking of safely removing and disposing the pad and replacing the metal shield with no insula...

Let's hope that it is problem solved!
You will probably have to source a ribcase one from the UK.

Re: Diagnosing a gearbox
What length/dimensions should I be looking for? I mentioned earlier the difference between the two levers is the length from the 'ball' (ie the pivot for the lever) to the tip of the selector (that engages with the selector rods). I suggest that you measure from the base of the pivot ball to the ti...

Re: Diagnosing a gearbox
I am sure someone will correct me if this is incorrect It is correct. The protrusion below the 'ball' is a little longer on the 1098 lever. The difference is enough to cause problems with selection of gears if a smoohcase lever is used with a ribcase gearbox. I haven't heard of it causing the box t...

Re: Removing a van door handle
Update! I used a strong pair of bent-nose pliers and some brute force to bend the offending piece of metal out of the way of the handle and was able to remove it. With the handle and the escutcheon plate (?) out of the way, I was able to see the problem. The metal pressing that forms the trailing ed...

Re: Stonechip coating on '68 van
Would the stone chip on the inner floor pans be for noise/vibration reduction ? I think so. It would be an anti-drumming measure. On my van, the bituminous coat on the cabin floor was under the final paint coat (same on other Minors I have owned) but there was stone chip coating OVER the original p...

Re: Removing a van door handle
Thanks for your replies. I recall having to take the door top off . I have stripped the door down to a bare shell--except for the handle that is refusing to come out. Simmitc: Thanks for all the info you provided about the lock. I should have made it clear that it is not part of the lock itself that...

Removing a van door handle
I am trying to remove the external handle from a drivers-side van door (same as a four-door saloon front driver-side door). I have taken the handle out of the passenger side without a problem. I have read previous posts on this site and elsewhere, but I haven’t found a solution. I have the door comp...

This is certainly the case with my van.The pickup I owned had a type of stonechip finish under the paint on the cab floors, which I reproduced on restoration. I’m pretty sure this was originally there.

Stonechip coating on '68 van
I am about to do a authentic restoration on a '68 Austin Minor van. Can anyone tell me: 1) if that model left the factory with a stonechip coating underneath? 2) if so, what areas were covered? 3) if so, was there body-coloured paint over the stone-chip? As far as I can see with my very original but...

Media blasting a van
This is further to my question a few days ago about the original type of paint on my 68 van. My question arises from my intention to take the body back to bare metal. I am thinking about media blasting it. 1) Are there panels on the van that should not be blasted due to risk of warping? I would be c...

Type of paint on a 1968 Minor
Can anyone tell me what type of paint was used on a 1968 Austin Minor van? I am taking mine back to bare metal and it still has its original paint. I am curious because it might affect my choice of paint removal.
