Re: Bore x Stroke.

Used to get really hung-up about this after reading the noted journalist LJK Setright in "Classic Cars" many years ago harping on about how unfortunate many British engines were. He said something like it can be mathematically proven that the best engine has the greatest number of cylinder...

Re: 2011 classic car show NEC auto jumble

Don't know if anyone has picked this up...

http://www.classicandsportscar.com/blog ... -this-year

It's number 7 on the list: an Alfasud engined Morris (Austin) Minor van.

Re: Prototype Minors

The FWD Minor was registered TFC 717 IIRC. Rob Golding in his Mini book states it had a transverse engine and an end-on gearbox, rather than the later in-sump transmission arrangement of Issigonis' later FWD production cars. Anyhow, think it's been mentioned on here before but Morris Motors and then...

Prototype Minors

A couple of things... Read recently that none other than WO Bentley was a huge admirer of the Minor, and conceived a high performance flat four for it off his own bat. Anyone know anything more about this? And then on another forum somebody's mentioned that there were quite a few proposals for a rep...

Re: Volkswagens!

Why the Minor did not come anywhere near the Beetle's tally of 20 million units is desperately sad, and the blame can be laid at the door of Lord Nuffield - who tried to strangle the car at birth - and then BMC's Austin-centric management which was no doubt embarrassed that its best-selling car was ...

Re: Austin A30 or 35.

Oh, blimey, the A30/35, and the Minor. I believe the little Austin was developed by Longbridge in a fit of pique after Nuffield rebuffed an Austin merger in the late Forties. And it has to be said two things about the A30/35 were remarkable: the AS3 engine and the car's incredible structural strengt...

Jack Daniels and Ferguson Four Wheel Drive

It's only tenuously related to the Minor, I know, but what do we know about this: At this point ('52) Issigonis left Morris for Alvis, but when Len Lord persuaded him back in '55, Issigonis immediately requested Jack to re-join him, which was agreed. Two Alvis people, Chris Kingham and John Shepherd...

Ray - I agree - as a Mini owner myself I am glad that BMC let Issigonis pursue the ten-foot terrier, but sad that BMC's accountants couldn't get their sums to work. Jonathan Wood's Issigonis biog poses the question what if Morris had really exploited the Minor's potential before the Austin takeover ...

Here's a few things I've picked up from reading stuff, like the Issigonis biogs, magazine articles, and so on. The flat-four that Issigonis proposed for the Minor wasn't related to the Jowett unit. The Javelin's designer, Gerald Palmer, and Issigonis were just thinking alike as great minds are wont ...
