Re: Metric vs English

To add to the discussion; The guinea was de-monetized with the Great ReCoinage of 1816. Its value of 21 shillings was decided by Sir Isaac Newton, then Master of the Mint. The sovereign, half sovereign, double sovereign and quintuple sovereign are still legal tender. The sixpence was finally demonet...

Re: Gearbox knocking

Thank you for your replies gentlemen.
As I suspected :-( . The gearbox was a John Evans recon box of about 20 years ago - I don't know whether he is still around?
Given the price of re-con boxes, a home rebuild is a distinct possibility! Luckily I have a spare so won't be off the road too long.

Gearbox knocking

Muriel Minor developed a regular knocking noise in her 1098 gearbox today.

Only occurs in 1st, 2nd and 3rd and reverse- knocking is related to speed.

Any thoughts?

Re: Almost broke down!

Whilst we are talking faulty coils..... I replaced my coil at Xmas - it came with an Accuspark electronic distributor I bought a few years back. I decided to fit the distributor having re-discovered it in the garage. However I didnt have suitable sized replacement vacuum pipe so abandoned the idea. ...

Re: Old photos

TWL is an Oxford CBC registration, the series starting in February 1953 and finishing in April 1953. Obviously all the factory cars had Oxford registrations. I have not come across TWL 77 before. DO 1076 is not a real registration number. Pictures of many of the prototype BMC cars have a DO 'registr...

Re: 1954 split screen

XVU followed by digits was issued from May 1959, however digits preceding XVU is a recent DVLA issue. Go to the DVLA vehicle check website and type in a few similar registrations - you'll see what I mean! Many current DVLA re-issue numbers seem to use 'X' as one of the letters - presumably as these ...

The plant is Verbascum thapsus, commonly known as great mullein or common mullein, hence 'mullein moth' :D

Re: Getting desperate!

Tell them that you have information on the early history of the car. That might swing it.

Good luck.

Contact DVLA - according to a poster on another thread they will forward info for £5.

Worth a try :D

chassis number should be stamped on bulkhead just to the right of bulge where bonnet pull rod comes through......unless it has been ground off..... :(

Classic car snobbery

Have been doing a good few miles around West Sussex and Hampshire this weekend in the Morris - lots of classic cars about- probably coming from and going to the Goodwood Revival. I always wave to other cars I pass but why do owners of 'expensive' cars never wave back? Once you buy a posh car do you ...

Re: 1959 split screen??

There could be a number of reasons why the registration date is given as 1959 - import / export, log book error etc, however the chassis number will give a definite year. Nice Stewart and Ardern plate!
