Re: Marina disc brakes on Minor swivels
Looks like they've been stored in a salt-water lake, yet the backplates look surprisingly good!

Re: 'Modern car' steering vibration....
Yes, they can get pretty well jammed on over the years with corrosion. Often, giving it a good soaking with penetrating oil/diesel/ATF, etc. for a few hours beforehand helps.

Nice saving, but at least the garage correctly identified the fault.

Cylinder head is probably from a Metro Turbo, which had the sculpting around the thermostat area - worth a good few quid on its own.

Re: Woodwork preservation and front doors
I fitted copper tube lining to all the drain holes, sealed in with epoxy, and this seems to have prevents water entering the wood via that route. That's a great idea! I have generally just applied sufficient Cuprinol/varnish so that it coats the inside of the drain holes, and try to keep them regul...

Re: Grumpys Rollover Jig
If removing just the engine, you can get away by removing the front panel, undoing all the usual bellhousing bolts, starter motor, carb, exhaust, heater connections, etc., and wheeling the engine away from the gearbox with a suitable trolley jack under the sump (use a plank of wood to protect it); i...

Re: Ignition Timing - Thoughts?
A good many 'classic' petrol engines seem to like a base setting of 10 degrees of advance or so. I once bought from E-bay, an 'abandoned project' Fiat 2.0-litre twin-cam Minor that had allegedly been 'rebuilt', however, when I tried to get it to run, it initially overheated badly; I discovered (in a...

Noise in 3rd gear
I recently changed my worn-out standard Minor ribbed-case gearbox for a used MG Midget close-ratio one to match the 1275 Midget engine in a 1970 Traveller. It was purchased fairly cheaply, and I opened up the side hatch prior to fitting it to take a look inside and all appeared pretty good. Having i...

Re: Closed NOS Points with No electrical continuity
Sounds like you have inadvertently stumbled across a semiconductor, probably as you say, as a result of years of oxidisation having set in. Perhaps try building a crystal radio "cat's whisker" set with it...

Re: Engine selling price
It all depends on several factors, including: 1. Is it an MG Midget* or Marina/Ital engine? 2. What overall condition is it in, i.e., just in need of light reconditioning or a full rebuild. 3. What mileage it may have done. 4. How complete is it, and does it include flywheel, clutch, and other ancil...

That'll probably be the same Matt Tomkins who writes/works for Practical Classics magazine, and who owns at least a couple of Minors. Looks like an interesting read...

Re: Front grille
You need to ideally remove the whole front panel (along with the 'hockey sticks'), then gain access to the rear nuts to remove the grille and chrome surround. Be wary, that the grille surround and hockey sticks is held by thin studs, which are prone to snapping, so give them a good soak with penetra...

Re: Morris Minor rear anti roll bar brackets / rear Hub seals
Hi, I have been reading though a number of posts and found one from my Father who was explaining how to make a Morris Minor handle. In that post he mentioned that the rear anti roll bar came from an Ital. Jules Sorry to hear of your Father's passing. Would you happen to have a link to your Father's...

Nice one! I did a similar thing a while ago with a 1965 saloon, with a similar magnet from B&Q, IIRC.

Re: 1275 pre A+ engine Breather arrangements
Ah well, I prefer the SU for winter use anyway since it has a choke control (my 40 DCOE had this blanked off).
I may have another go with it next year when it gets warmer...
Thanks for the advice.

Re: 1275 pre A+ engine Breather arrangements
Well, I tried re-routing the crankcase breather hose from the canister on the front of the engine directly into a tap on the Weber 40DCOE inlet manifold, took it for a wee spin yesterday, and rather than blowing engine oil out of the rear scroll seal, it instead sucked it into the engine and I was f...

Re: 1275 pre A+ engine Breather arrangements
Thanks, Phil. Just how 'adjacent' is that pipe to the air cleaner, and how do you find it runs on a 45 DCOE (I presume you have a 1275, and what appears to be no vacuum connection to the distributor)? My 40 DCOE is currently fitted with trumpets, and a 'RAM AIR' filter sock; I was considering the fi...

Re: 1275 pre A+ engine Breather arrangements
Does anyone know how to arrange the crankcase breathing for a 1275cc MG Midget engine (12CE) fitted with a Weber 40DCOE carb? I recently fitted one to mine (in place of a SU HIF44), left the crankcase breather pipe from the oil trap canister on the front of the engine open to atmosphere and took it ...
