Later distrubutors do fit, yes - I've run my Series MM on an old DM2 or 25D from a 948 while the original distributor was being rebuilt and it ran well!

Highway yellow

Too old for Limeflower I think, being a 1962 car. But definitely Highway Yellow even though people love telling me that it's not an original colour (which of course it is)!

Ah, OK. But if the PO fitted a 948 box yet retaining the 'up and over' reverse mechanism for originality's sake, he will have (I assume) fitted the old 803 selector rod to enable this. Raising the compression will doubtless give a bit more power (I think it was around an additional 3 bhp when new?), but having had 1098s with high and low compression engines, I can honestly say I didn't really notice the difference

I'd put money on this being an ignition issue given that you've replaced various items. I would get hold of good quality ones from the Distributor Doctor and replace them.
