what was the spiggot bush like ,could be the shaft clattering before full take up of power,or would that not be the case once fully out clutch, wear in the spigot bush on ford transits(I've had many over the years) causes loads of vibration and clatter.

Re: Cylinders out and knocking
its a shame you didnt post pror to head off and crank examination, since I.m sure you would have been advised to have a compression test, obviously not possible now untill all is back together. Its the classic symptoms of head gasket failure, and a test would have removed any doubt.

Re: Handbrake not working

before you do anything else take the top off the float chamber on top of the cab (Two screws)r and see if there is any petrol in there, sounds like a stuck needle valve not letting petrol into the carb

try dropping the ile speed (How do you know its now at 700) if too high it will lift the piston and move the contact of the pin higher up. Ideal tickover is to be just high enough to put the ign light out,500 to 600 is the average I believe, depending on condition of the engine etc.

have you checked that there is oil (Light oil) in the dash pot on the carb,To check unscrew the plunger pull it up and then push it back in there should be a fair amount of resistance, if none then add oil 3 in 1.If the piston is allowed to fly about there is no control on the position of the needle...

Could you do this test and report back, with the engine hot, take oil filler cap off hold your hand over the hole and rev the engine . On a good engine you should feel very little out flow of air/ engine fumes,(there will always be some,)on a slightly worn engine there will be a noticeable / flow, on ...
