I used to have an 86 Cavalier about 15 years ago - I really loved it and it didn't cost me much either. Very high mileage but I couldn't kill it despite being a teenager - they really were nice. Anyway - the Traveller... By the time you've bought new wood and parts, you're going to spend £1500+ and ...

What was wrong with £2 worth of Bowden cable? you need electronic throttle control to meet new emmissions regulations. The car industry is an easy target for legislation, whilst many other industries pour out pollution without the same kind of legislation. Anyway - that's drifting off the subject o...

Not checked the spark as it always seems to idle fine, and only suffers under load which suggests fueling to me.
I had a faulty rotor arm - that showed up as a missfire under partial load - and eventually died completely in the fast lane of M6 with my sister driving.

I've found alternator conversions to be very unreliable - I have yet to come across a Minor owner who fitted an ACR Alternator that never had a problem within a couple of years. (broken bottom pulley, faulty Alternator etc...) Sometimes problems within days! With good maintenance, a standard Minor i...

You need to do the checks when it has conked out 'hot' otherwise you can miss the problem :( Do you still get a spark when it conks out? [Check by removing a lead and connecting to a spare plug - rest it on the block / head nuts to earth it] Do you still get a good flow of petrol to the carb when it...

(Rusty plate disappeared years' ago.)
the plate is not actually required - despite what you may be told. The rule only applies to post 1985 cars...
Not that it is a good idea to have the plate missing! The boys in blue can take a strong dislike to that.

Mr Tester asks Have you got your V5 on you? Well, of course not! Apparently old cars aren't there and have to be entered in. The VIN number of old cars is not in the standardised format so can't be looked up unless the MOT tester is a computer wizz kid / hacker. Bringing the V5 is really helpful - ...

when you adjusted the brakes, were the wheels hard to turn until you went back a click? A common problem with the recent brake shoes is that they foul the snail adjuster. If you have this problem, when you turn it until it 'locks' you may only be loading the snail cam onto the shoe backplate and not...

Topic: Rear wheel brake cylinder seals - what's the polo for?

I'm thinking pattern parts might do....any last thoughts on that? The pattern parts are more difficult to bleed due to the seal design (round the piston instead of a cup on the end of the piston). This allows more air to get trapped in the cylinder. If you fill the cylinder full before fitting you ...

948 engine will say '948' on the side off the block (manifold side)
1098 engine should have an ally plate saying '1098' in roughly the same place.

Ratios are not a lot different between 1098 and 948 box, but the 948 is a little slower (and much more smooth) than the 1098.

The slim o-ring is just a dust seal on the handbrake piston. To remove the hydraulic piston you need to remove the handbrake lever, then remove the hydraulic piston which sits further down the bore. When the hydraulic piston is out you can change the hydraulic seal. If you are lucky, one of the seal...
