Re: Gearbox oil leaking from bolt next to drain plug

I was just thinking to do the same, probably need to drain the gearbox before.

Re: Gearbox oil leaking from bolt next to drain plug

Thanks Bill, it looks like that one but I wasn't 100% sure as the image doesn't show the bottom of the gearbox where the plug is fitted. I'm afraid that when I remove it maybe I can't fit it anymore without taking the gearbox apart.

Gearbox oil leaking from bolt next to drain plug

Hello all,
The gearbox of my traveller is leaking a few drops of oil every day from the bolt next the the drain plug.
Any suggestions on how to solve this, is it save to remove the bolt?
Thanks,
Marco

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Thank you Stephen, your were right and it was something electrical. The only thing I did today was removing the distributor cap and tightening the connection of the condenser and the engine is running beautiful again! I still wanted to set the correct mixture by using the lift pin on the carburetor ...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Here I am again... I took everything apart again and found the valve timing one tooth off. Happy me I thought that I found the problem so put everything back together, checked the valve clearance, set the timing and started the engine. The engine was running perfect for about a minute and then start...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Its strange because as far as I know the car was only exported once form the UK to NL in 1978 and it still is in NL.....

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

I guess my engine is not the original fitted as the car is from 30 June 1970 or at least that is what the documents say when it was imported in Holland in 1978. I came across another mystery, as you can see the chassis nbr has a L for lefthand drive but it is a RHD car. I will try to contact the Bri...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Its all clear now, I just saw Phil's message but already measured the gaps and they are identical and the half moons are different. I'm just wondering until when they installed this old type distributor, the car is supposed to be from June 1970 so one of the later models. Could it be an older engine...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Thanks for all the info! My distributor drive and housing both have no o-ring or any space to fit them, could it be a different type? Also I'm confused about the "offset" where can I see that, is it the gap on the front of the distributor drive? They seem to be identical on both sides.. Ma...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Thanks Phil, can I just skip the metal vacuum pipe with the vapor trap and go straight to the carburetor which has also a push on connection or should I still keep that part?

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

It seems I have another problem... As I have the distributor removed I checked the vacuum unit and its broken, the air is just going through the unit. Could this be part of the problem? I tried to find a vacuum unit with a screw on fit but couldn't find any online, do you have any suggestions? Thank...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

I removed the distributor to have a look at the position of the distributor drive when piston 1 at TDC and attached picture do you think it is in the correct position? Also I can't understand why I had to turn the distributor so much to set the static timing could it be that the timing chain is one ...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Thanks again for all the tips, it sounds complex to check the camshaft timing and at the moment I don't have a dial gauge and timing disc but if necessary I will go for it. The engine was running ok before I took it apart, the reason was a leaking timing cover seal and when I took the cover off I no...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Thanks for the quick reply Phil.
Can you tell me how to check the valve timing, I couldn't find it in the guide.
I installed the gears and had the marks aligned as you can see in the picture I attached.
Does it mean I have to take the engine apart again...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Hello all, I finally received the correct parts and reassembled the engine. Then I set the static timing at 3° before TDC with the test lamp and had to turn the distributor quite a bit anti clockwise to get the correct position, could this be ok? When I started the engine, it started but is not runn...

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

I talked to the seller and they couldn't explain why the wrong camshaft gear was in the correct box but they send me a new one.
I guess I just escaped a complete disaster!

Re: Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Thanks for your quick replies!
I got the attached kit at Moss and it seems the camshaft gear is marked wrong... I will contact them to see what happened.

Alignment dots duplex timing chain

Hello all, I'm the owner of a 1970 traveller and currently replacing the single timing chain for a duplex kit but when installing the duplex gears I noticed that the alignment dots are not on the same spots as the simplex gears as you can see on the attached pictures. Can anyone tell me if this is n...
