I am in the process of stripping the 1969 2 Door Saloon down for a resto , came to disconnect the column wiring from the main loom behind the Glove box Liner and discovered that the Black Wire ( earth) from the Column wiring was not connected ..... there appeared no obvious place it had come from . ...

That’s an interesting point of view but if you want reliability, leave it as standard. Regarding safety, well if the car is being upgraded performance wise, bigger brakes etc should be a thought. All these mods are down to preference really, however if you go too far, not much point driving a Minor...
