Re: DPO issues with donor cars as well as project cars

Finally getting to the welding. Had to suss out a way to pull the front clip tight up against the floor, used a come-along wrapped around the rear axle and hooked on the cross member. Got the seam across the floor welded up and the cowl ends welded. Good to be making some real progress in this heat ...

Re: Driving a Failed voluntary MOT vehicle?

USA driver here with some insights: Not all our states have a vehicle safety inspection program; those that do, unless the vehicle is wildly and obviously unsafe to operate, you get a fail sticker (in Virginia, at least) that allows operation of the vehicle ONLY to and from the driver's home and rep...

I'm leaning towards a failed bendix gear. It's probably jammed against the transmission case.

Re: Driver behaviour

I agree with the Bloody Huge Lorry syndrome. Moving apartment blocks with no forward visibility whatsoever. And all equipped with stinky noisy diesel engines. I've owned several pickup trucks but NONE as large as the modern type.

Re: DPO issues with donor cars as well as project cars

Still scavenging the carcass of Donor 2 for as much as I can manage to remove. Got the wing bolts out last night; You guys in the UK might find this oddly cheapskate of me, but getting BSF 5/16 screws here in the US is a bit of a PITA. Saved the taillamp bases, rear bumper irons, and the parking brak...

Re: Bronze face speedometer

No number on the front that I can discern. Odd. Someone along the years hand wrote MPH equivalents on the dial. Very faint, fortunately.

Re: Bronze face speedometer

Seems that they had model numbers to match up rear axle ratios to speedometers. I found an Australian website that is selling one, so Morris/Smiths provided appropriate units for the market. Not surprising, really; just odd that I have one here in Florida. No telling what history follows the two don...

Bronze face speedometer

While sorting through my accumulated parts last night, I found that one of my speedometers is marked for KPH instead of MPH. It's unfortunately missing it's needles for both the fuel gauge and the speedometer. Wasn't aware of a KMH version! I wonder, in fact, if the odometer is calibrated for Kilome...

Re: Other drivers...

My commute to and from work involves a stretch of two-lane about ten miles in length. Without FAIL, someone in a huge diesel pickup will ride right up on my rear bumper and start flashing his lights intending to pass.... against a constant flow of opposing traffic. I'm not driving the Moggy yet; I d...

Tudor WIndscreen washer installation

So; having salvaged the Tudor screen washer kit from Donor 2, I had a look at the cowl last evening to determine the location for the nozzles. Turns out that, possibly due to the wiper cable routing, neither nozzle was located the same way. One was markedly closer to the screen and the other closer ...

Re: Torsion Bar Removal.. do I need to cut it out?

Get a brass hammer for your kit. You can wallop stuff pretty hard with it and not damage the part. Sometimes, as Granny used to say, Give it the boot!

She's a beauty, Stewart! I'm doing a '57 US import 2dr myself, a mongrel of bits from her and two 1960 donor cars. Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Re: old timer special?

My '57 has stainless window trim as did/do both of my '60 donor cars; one had a tray but it was trashed; I still have the bar as I might add a mesh net a la VW and reinstall it. My '57 came with no inside trim whatsoever, so I don't know what Morris put in it; again, both donors have single color pa...

Re: Warranty certificates.

Not to change the subject substantially, but I find this interesting because I have the owner's manual from my '52 Plymouth Cambridge and it contains what must have been an outstanding warranty for the time.... 6 months! After that, you were on your own! I think ALL the major manufacturers had very ...

Re: DPO issues with donor cars as well as project cars

Took out the dash to make room for the final cuts; this was finished up 9pm last night in the dark. Saving the dash panels for the latch brackets and switches I haven't removed yet. Need to determine location and direction of final cuts; how close to the inner wings and across or down through. Rathe...

Re: 81 years on; we doff our caps to them

Funny you should mention that. I was born and raised in Amherst County and several of my relatives lived in Bedford. My Uncle George walked from Normandy to Berlin in 1944-45 and lived until 1981. My Uncle William owned a farm near Smith Mountain Lake and had two ships shot out from under him in the...
