Re: 1098 Ribbed Gearbox Remote not operating correcty
Yes, I too have read that sometimes these gearboxes need a sharp push to engage reverse. These detents and springs in question are not an interlock as such but simply a means to ensure reverse is not selected without a bit of additional and deliberate effort. I have decided to back the bolt off and ...

Re: 1098 Ribbed Gearbox Remote not operating correcty
OK - I got a replacement remote, cleaned it all up and works a treat the gear stick seats correctly and all gears select smoothly However, when i tighten up the reverse anti rattle bolt ( see photo) reverse is no longer possible. This seems to lock up the little spring and ball bearing (5) against t...

Re: 1098 Ribbed Gearbox Remote not operating correcty
Thanks for all the contributions. OK it is a ribbed gearbox - see photo The gearstick is a Ribbed type with longer finger ( 1 inch) So I started to think the remote was from a smooth case type as suggested - after some more research Casting numbers 2A 3411 do indeed point to a 998 smooth box remote....

1098 Ribbed Gearbox Remote not operating correcty
I bought a (Project) Traveller with standard 1098 Engine and I presume standard Ribbed Gearbox. I can select only 1st and 2nd but even that does not feel correct and obviously should not need forcing. I have rebuilt the gearbox with new bearings etc and attached the tail housing and can select all g...

Re: 1098 Gearbox 3rd Motion shaft bearing
I have had an update from ESM and the guy who builds their gearboxes says he has used this type of Belleville washer without issue but ESM could not explain why a Belleville type washer would be used in this situation. Interestingly, I have been told they no longer issue the Belleville type and now ...

Re: 1098 Gearbox 3rd Motion shaft bearing
I spoke to ESM and the person on the phone was aware of this particular item but could not explain why it would not be flat but will raise the question with their gearbox person. Lets see what they have to say next week. Logic determines if new replacement bearings are thinner that the original then...

Re: 1098 Gearbox 3rd Motion shaft bearing
Yes - excellent guide indeed - the washer in the guide looks flat but difficult to tell
My question is why a shim would not be flat
I have also been following this excellent video series on YouTube

1098 Gearbox 3rd Motion shaft bearing
Just overhauling my gearbox and have bought a new set of bearings from ESM and apparently the original bearings had a slightly wider inner race case than the outer race case. New bearings however have the same width inner and outer race so ESM supply an additional washer to act as a spacer. However ...

Collets and Valve Spring Caps
I am just re assembling my 1098 12G202 head and notice the collets and caps don't look just right. Looking back at photos before I stripped it is the same as i found it. It just looks like the collets are protruding a little too high above the caps and their appears to be gaps between the collets. A...

Re: what is the best oil for running in a engine rebuild
I would add it you really want to help protect the engine, you could do say 500 miles and avoid labouring or racing the engine as part of the running in process. Then drain the oil and change the filter and then add a flushing oil to help remove any remaining contaminants from the rebuild. Follow fl...

Re: Timing Gear Crank Packing Washer / Shim
It is Correct way round Phil - would be even bigger difference if wrong way round and also the timing dots on both sprockets are facing outwards so again proving is correct way round. Thanks

Timing Gear Crank Packing Washer / Shim
I am rebuilding my 1098 engine and have bought a duplex timing chain from ESM. When checking the camshaft drive sprocket and the crank sprocket alignment I find there is a 35 thou difference with the camshaft sprocket sprocket sticking out further which would obviously wear the chain quickly. The en...

Re: Crank Thrust Bearings - which way round
Thanks Phil The Official Workshop Manual AKD 530 seems to make no mention of this and the Haynes manual wording is very vague so good to know it is correct. end float is within tolerance at 0.003 on standard thrust washers and crank rotates just nice with new main bearings and caps torqued down :) I...

Crank Thrust Bearings - which way round
Had a quick search on which way round to install the crank thrust bearings - am sure the copper side with groves faces the crank, with back side up against the block - this seems to make sense as the oil groves help lubricate the rotating crank can someone confirm this please?

Re: ESM Head Gasket set quality - thoughts please?
The ESM head gasket has arrived and I am pleased to say it looks much better than the photo on ESM website. It is copper backed and has the re enforcement rings that cheaper gaskets do not. I will fit this gasket as am confident is good one.

ESM Head Gasket set quality - thoughts please?
I am rebuilding my Traveller 1098 engine and was wondering if there is any feedback / thoughts on the ESM head gasket set - specifically the actual head gasket. I remember some gaskets are better than others around the water / oil feed holes and cylinder bore? I also see the kit has o rings for valv...
