Added Benefits Of Restoration Project
Hi all, My 1958 Tourer restoration project is well underway and I have just discovered an added benefit by deciding to take apart my 1958 Morris Minor Tourer. It’s given me the confidence to tackle simple tasks on my work vehicles and my wife’s car. Previously, and this may sound crazy, but I had ne...

1958 Tourer Rear Axle and Diff Removal
Hi All, An update for those of you not yet fed up with all of my questions :D I’m taking my rear axle to a shotblasting company who have recommended vapour blasting to remover all of the dirt and rust. I’ve stripped the axle down to leave just the housing and really pleased with how the entire rear ...

Re: 1958 Tourer Leaf Springs
No problem You could always do as I have done - remove the bottom leaf of the 7 leaf spring to give a bit more flexibility without loosing too much of the load carrying capacity. So a hybrid 6 leaf spring. 8) Interesting option, didn’t realise that could be done. Maybe start with the old seven leaf...

Re: 1958 Tourer Leaf Springs
Thanks for that, I understand what you mean. I guess I flip a coin now!philthehill wrote: ↑Fri May 30, 2025 3:40 pm I would not say it is a softer ride or maybe bouncy just that the 7 leaf spring with the thinner leaves will flex and absorb a bump better.

Re: 1958 Tourer Leaf Springs
The two spring clamps go in front of the axle and the one spring clamp goes to the rear of the axle. I recommend that you fit poly bushes to the spring eyes and poly pads under the metal spring locating plates. You can have either 5 leaves or 7 leaves the working load is the same at 440 lb. The 7 l...

1958 Tourer Leaf Springs
Hi Everyone, More questions for you all, if you would be so kind :) I stripped the leaf springs off the car last week and was thinking about renovation or replacement and a couple of questions arose. Speaking to Jones Springs in Dudley about replacements they seemed to think the tourer should be fit...

And the confidence to use it.... I'll even excuse you mixing me up with Phil yesterday, as he's such a knowledgeable guy :D Hi Geoberni, Apologies for the mix up and thanks for the advice, as you say it is all about the knowledge and confidence! I’ll post some more updates as I progress. Tha...

Re: 1958 Tourer Steering Column Removal
Finally, it's done!
Turns out sometimes you just need a bigger hammer!
Steering column and rack removed, onwards with a few smaller bits and bobs to remove, and then a September appointment with a full body chemical paint removal!
Happy Days!

Re: 1958 Tourer Steering Column Removal
Thanks for the additional advice and clarity Phil,
Maybe I’m being a little too tentative, just didn’t want to mess it up. I’ll make this my Sunday morning job this weekend. Thanks for the help.

Re: Pale Ivory Tourer
this probably means there may well be areas of the original paint that weren't resprayed (under the rear seats, behind glove boxes etc.) and any paint place should be able to create a match from that. Great idea, I took a look and there may be some possibly useful spots under the car that show the ...

Re: Pale Ivory Tourer
Hi Stephen, Thanks for the link, it confirms the heritage certificate details so I’m happy that the original colour was Pale Ivory I’ve just never seen the actual colour. I’d like to see it “in the flesh” before committing to an expensive respray in a colour that I then don’t really like. Thanks Ste...

Re: Pale Ivory Tourer
Hi M.M.,
Thanks for the message.
I did think the various print and computer colours would confuse the issue but I just haven’t been able to get a look at a Pale Ivory colour scheme.
Yes, the original colour of my tourer was Pale Ivory.
Thanks again.

Pale Ivory Tourer
Hi Everyone, I’m currently stripping down my 1958 tourer, it’s been resprayed a blue colour over the original Pale Ivory and I’m considering my colour choices for my respray when the time comes. I’ve not seen a confirmed pale ivory colour, lots of old English white, various cream colours but I’m rea...

Re: 1958 Tourer Steering Column Removal
I appear to just be confusing myself further! What I thought was the solution was just the distraction of the damper housing at the rear. And of course I’ve been reading the instructions and diagrams for the MM & Series II and of course mine is a 1000. I have read (several times!) the J.J.1 sect...

Re: 1958 Tourer Steering Column Removal
Ah, I completely misunderstood the sentence about the clamp and bolt. I thought it was the clamp at the base of the column but looking at the diagram it’s something else entirely. “ The Workshop Manual (section J.2) does state to 'remove the clamp nut and bolt...', the reason being that the drive ha...

Re: 1958 Tourer Steering Column Removal
Thanks for the reply, I’ve tried as suggested and still no luck.
I removed the bottom cover and gasket and tried tapping the shaft at the bottom which I assumed was the steering column base but no joy.
More pictures attached showing hopefully more to aid with further suggestions (please).

Re: 1958 Tourer Steering Column Removal
Hi M.M.,
Thanks for the confirmation.
Yes, bottom bolt out and top screws/caps loosened, so I think I’m almost there, just a little gentle hammer help perhaps.
I didn’t want to go that route without confirmation and find there’s a hidden bolt or something.
Thanks again.

1958 Tourer Steering Column Removal
Hi Everyone, I’m back with another challenge, the final major piece of the car before most everything is off and I can start stripping paint, I’m struggling to remove the steering column. I’ve removed the steering wheel, loosened the top screws holding the column in place and loosened the bolt at th...

Re: 1958 Tourer Windscreen Removal
Having thought about the windscreen and whether a heated option would be a good idea, it occurred to me that actually, once I’ve finished the project I’m unlikely to take Bryan out in cold weather apart from maybe an occasional sunny and dry, Christmas Day run! So I probably wouldn’t used a heated s...
