Re: Diagnosing a gearbox
Further to my gearbox woes... Is there a gearbox 'guru' on here that might be able to advise? Although I'm not able to pull the rib case box out yet, I'm wondering... Can I fit a remote shifter housing/assembly to my smooth case series 2 box.. bearing in mind, it already has 1000 box internals and d...

Re: Diagnosing a gearbox
Thanks. An expert in the boxes here said that it's most likely worn 'dog teeth' on that synchro and the input shaft that it operates with. The more it jumps out, the more it wears a taper and the worse it gets. I'm told there are 3 different sets of internals and spares are only available for the la...

Re: Diagnosing a gearbox
An update: I sourced the correct gear stick and it did improve the situation somewhat, but unfortunately didn't cure it. Continual loading of the box under acceleration still results in it jumping out of 4th it just takes a little bit longer to happen (almost instantly before) It seems a strip down ...

Re: Diagnosing a gearbox
Yes I think so, but I've asked the person who sold it to check what they have. I also note that it's just the stick going into a metal ball socket, no plastic parts or springs so I need to check parts diagrams to see what should be there ..

Re: Diagnosing a gearbox
I haven't started removal.. checking the shifter dimensions is easy enough. What length/dimensions should I be looking for?

Re: Diagnosing a gearbox
Thanks for all the comments. The shifter I believe to be correct it also came with the box. If it was incorrect, I would expect it to cause problems in all gears, not just top. I spoke to someone with 50 years experience in A series engines and all derivatives of the gearboxes today. I mentioned the...

Diagnosing a gearbox
Hi Guys, I just finished fitting a rib case gearbox into my Morris. It was a bit of a punt as the history of the box was unknown. On the surface of it things looked pretty good. It is a nice quiet box, changes nicely and feels to have good synchros but it jumps out of top (4th) gear on acceleration....

Re: Ribcase gearbox and a pick a mix of components
Thanks. This tells me that it's not worth going to the trouble just to keep the original shifter. The previous elderly owner had added a few bits and pieces to the car that has taken it away from being an original Series 2. I can understand changing the 803.. He already changed the diff, gearbox rat...

Re: Ribcase gearbox and a pick a mix of components
I have read that in the past.
Unfortunately it doesn't help with the questions I asked as it is all about the same set up that I already have fitted (except I have the correct back plate for the box).

Re: Ribcase gearbox and a pick a mix of components
Thanks for your thoughts. I haven't been able to put many miles on the existing box due to the engine situation. I do know that it has some bearing noise, not terrible, but easily heard. A Minor specialist here suggested that the smooth case boxes are marginal behind a 1098. I will assess the rib bo...

Ribcase gearbox and a pick a mix of components
Hi Guys, I'll preface this by saying I've had a search through the topics but can't quite find the answers I need... I have a 56 Series 2. The previous owner fitted a 1098, that is mated to a smooth case box into which he put Minor 1000 components/ratios. He retained a 950 back plate, flywheel and c...

Re: Coolant Loss
Hi Oliver, I was aware of the test you mention. Very early on in this thread, I already mentioned that the car did not have any of the classic failed gasket symptoms and that included any bubbles in the coolant or oil contamination. The coolant remaining at the low-level many people find as normal w...

Re: Coolant Loss an update on cause
Hi Guys, I thought I'd share for those of you who were good enough to contribute to this thread... My very first suspicion was confirmed today. I do in fact have a leaking head gasket...😔 I took the car to get it registered again after many years being off the road, so at least there is one more Mor...

Re: How much can a 948 clutch handle?
Thanks Phil, that's great information. I'm not sure how readily available those spitfire clutches are in Australia, but it's good starting point. Presumably I retain the 948 clutch disc? Of course I have no idea what's fitted at present. I managed to get the old girl registered again today after 12 ...

How much can a 948 clutch handle?
The previous owner of my Series 2 obviously wanted a later car but went about it a different way. My car is a '56 Series 2.. with a 1098..fitted to either a 1000 smooth case gearbox with a Series 2 shifter, or, a Series 2 box and shifter with 1000 ratios... I suspect the latter as he wrote on the si...

Re: Coolant Loss
Thought I'd report back... Firstly, Phil... The heater only had a slight warmth to it, even at normal temp and only at higher engine speed. Having read through the forum, I started with a back wash. Almost no debris, good flow... So then i set it up with nothing on the head tap (open) filled the rad...

Re: Coolant Loss
A number of interesting comments, thanks to all. I still believe the main issue is the cap. The measurement shown in the post earlier by one of you at 28mm is not what mine is (calliper measurement shown). The reference to reflushing is potentially valid even though the cooling system has been drain...

Re: Coolant Loss
I agree. My cap is marked as the correct one already. Unfortunately they are only available from specialist suppliers here, I've tried all the mainstream parts supplies already. I need to get one in the next few days as I have to take the car to the department of roads, registration etc to get its r...
