Layshaft rollers
Got an eBay kit from rated supplier to do very noisy gearbox (input bearing was actually breaking up!) and have also replaced very worn layshaft but find both layshaft needle rollers are very slightly longer than original so spring rings cannot be fitted. Is it a problem that they float around (a ve...

Re: DIY valve work
IMHO it is better to let the machine shop do the job and take the risk. I'm lucky enough to have a nearby machine shop. Got a bottom end being done there now. And I'll prob. get exhaust valve seats done there too. He mostly does modern cars now but when I said it was a 1100 A series he said he'd go...

Re: DIY valve work
Do you mean valves or valve guides? Perhaps lapping your own valves in would be step 1. Actually done that but not for some years. Doing your own guides would be next I think. And machining for larger valves might come after that? Just toying with the idea at the mo (got an awful lot of time on my ...

DIY valve work
Probably takes a year or two to learn, but is sizing/fitting your own valves feasible? I suppose you need a good solid drill stand with a milling table. Anybody come across a good book on the subject?

Re: Opening up a 202 head
I bought a larger BMC Special Tuning competition dynamo pulley from Tony Bloor back in the seventies and it sat on a shelf in my workshop for many years. Tony Bloor got in touch with me and bought it back to go on his Broadspeed Mini as the Mini had to comply with various period regulations. As tha...

What are your improved cam followers about? Calver puts on his site "To avoid premature wear, I very strongly advise, to the point of insistence, that you use the cam followers sold on this site (CST3024 standard type, CST3025 race type) as they have had the face re-profiled to give them the e...

Re: Opening up a 202 head
See below my version of a tuned small block 948cc 'A' Series:- This ran in my Minor for several years until superseded by a 1400cc unit. That sounds lively :D A duplex is also on my list but I'm going for a much more gentle motor so I won't be putting in performance rods etc. but the cooper cam I'v...

Found one of those key articles...as you do. Not surprisingly coming from the Mini A series camp :tu1: I'm sure a read this during the covid lockdowns and then lost my bookmarks due to pc failure (again). https://www.minimania.com/Project_Small_Bore__Part_2__Cylinder_Head Apparently the mini cooper ...

Re: Opening up a 202 head
You could " blueprint" the head to manifold , I'm sure gasflow doesn't like those steps... John ;-) Yes, you're right...that's one of the things that might help. Quite an interesting project, thinking I might save it for the autumn/winter and make the most of the weather now (paintwork :w...

Re: Opening up a 202 head
Cheers folks, some good advice there. I'm just a bit curious as to what could be got out of the 202 head, probably not a lot, but I've got a good inlet m'fold, lcb and a cooper cam so I've got the basis to get enough out for a more interesting drive hopefully without upsetting my reground 60 year ol...

After reading some bad reviews re: longevity of electrical grinders, think I'll prob. go back to air, also more choice, including 90degree beasties which i think would be easier to handle. Anybody used one of these for carving cast iron? https://ffx.co.uk/products/draper-draper-sfag90-storm-force-90...

Re: Best recon engine supplier?
I'm thinking about replacing my engine with a recon unit as I want to daily my car soon and need it ship shape. Yes ESM are a pretty good act aren't they...wide variety of stuff and it comes quick, and some great upgrades too but those recon engines have been OOS for ages, wonder what's going on th...

Re: New Tank
Just make sure that there is good metal to metal contact between Tank and Body Shell somewhere, DON'T just rely on the screws to perform that function. Otherwise you'll be wondering why the Fuel Gauge isn't working, or it's reading wrongly..... Very good point...especially as I've gone overboard wi...

New Tank
Putting in a new esm petrol tank. Repainting (rather a flaky powder coating). Needed to grind the corners a bit on the boot tank flange to fit but not a bad fit and lines up with previous fixing points.
Bed onto the flange with plummer's putty (quite stiff, waterproof and doesn't set)?

Yes I might not go the whole hog either. Bigger inlet valves would prob. make a big difference but then there's a trade off with fuel economy.King Kenny wrote: βFri Apr 05, 2024 8:00 pm I did the same many years ago when I overhaled the engine. I followed the book but did not go the full hog.

Opening up a 202 head
Got a couple of spare 1098 heads kicking about and have decided to have a go at improving one (a la David Vizard's interesting book) so I need a die grinder...prob. mains electric (my compressor good for paint but runs out of breath with rotary tools) anybody found a good one? The main target is ope...

Thank you all, I'll save my money and try and get the scroll system working properly.
If it doesn't I'll fit a little catch tray underneath. This car is NOT going to leave embarrassing little deposits around
