No idea. I assumed so as it's a relatively virgin low mileage one lady owner for decades car but I can't be sure.

Re: Wood and breathers.

Ah, OK. I imagined my 'G' reg '68 would be a 'later' rather than an earlier car.
I think my engine's coming out anyway as it sounds like the mains are a bit grumbly and I want to address the 'ticking' which isn't rockers, and sounds a bit 'cam follower-y...

Wood and breathers.

Went out yesterday to treat the black staining that has started on a couple of the Traveller's joints. I sanded the varnish (or whatever it is0 down to mostly wood, mixed up some acid crystals, soaked a fresh washing up sponge with it and taped the sponge over the joint to go overnight. Seems to be ...

Re: Vacuum Advance.

Well, after getting the timing sorted I thought I'd give it its first proper run as my errant offspring were meeting up near Cadnam, some 30 miles away and requested my attendance. So, 7 miles of fast 'B' road, through busy busy Wilton/Salisbury, down the A36 and off into the bushes, My dad always u...

Re: Cameras

I have front and rear facing cameras on my bicycle (Following an incident where I had to defend myself against physical assault...successfully I might add) and I fancy that other road users are more aware of such things nowadays, as you don't see quite as many passing within inches, as you once did...

There are some sayings that I frequently use when I am driving... 'Only a fool brakes the two second rule'. 'The best place for the idiot behind you, is in front of you'. Anybody got any more?..... Re: calling the police

Sorry everyone...E scooters again. The other day I was confronted by an illegal E scooter coming at me on a narrow pavement. I kept walking straight (in the new Highway Code, pedestrians are supposed to be King)... Pedestrians have always had 'right of way' and on pavements not even bicycles can be...

[. Remember the advance unit is meant to be calibrated to operate a certain degree of advance at a certain pressure.

Do these units have different diaphragm stiffness according to the curve required then?... And if so are they marked in some form to distinguish one from another?

[ Stephen We're other cars like the Mini, Traveller, 1100 etc with A Series engines so equipped at that time do you know ? [/quote] Yes although I don't know the details of exactly which cars. Re: Knocking from engine on medium revs.

I have not got a wealth of experience with the A Series, most of mine is with Vauxhall four cylinders but big end noise is generally most audible at the transition between on and off throttle, when there is the lowest load on the crank. Number one is also the last big end to be pressurised during a ...

Re: Engine Number

No, cars destined for export are marked as such on Heritage Certificates. Mine is “home market”. Closed circuit breathing engines are 10ME not 10MA According to my rough estimates, there were 6 months of tourer production in 1969. If that was even over the 6 months it would be very roughly 30 cars ...

Re: Vacuum Advance.

How long are these things meant to last anyway? I have never had to replace one but maybe modern replicas are liable to failure? I guess anything from the Dizzy Doc would be good quality though........ I never thought they.d be a thing that fails but at the end of the day, it's got a flexible diaph...

My '68 which is an untouched 65,000 from new 'little old lady' car has the simpler 'tube to carb' breather. Maybe the PCV was for an export market originally? I know the Americans saw that system as desirable...

Re: Vacuum Advance.

Good job. I would have purchased the vacuum advance from Distributor Doctor as these are absolutely the same as the original. Stephen Ah well, ... To be honest, the less I have to do with ignition timing the better so it's getting some kind of electronic 'fit and forget' soon. I like originally but...

Vacuum Advance.

Well, during the course of fiddling, an d checking timing (horribly retarded), I noticed removing the vacuum advance pipe made no difference to engine running so I popped the distributor cap off and gave the pipe a suck... Yep, just draws air and the dizzy back plate doesn't move. Ordered a new one ...

Re: Heater valves and weird old filters.

Regard Facom tools yes they are expensive but they are a joy to use. I was very lucky to get my set in a sale and I believe they were also incorrectly priced but the seller honoured the price. I justify the price of tools like this: if a tool stops me having a horrible time grazing my knuckles, swea...

Re: Heater valves and weird old filters.

Incidentally, sometimes the heater valve leaks and it appears to be coming from the join with the head. It is actually coming up the studs. The solution is to remove the studs and apply thread sealant to the stud threads that go into the head. This also sometimes happens with the thermostat housing...

Re: Heater valves and weird old filters.

Sounds like you have been busy. Well done. It is good that you have corrected the oil filter being assembled incorrectly because, as you say, the oil would not have been filtered at all. On the subject of timing, the mechanical (centrifugal) advance of the Lucas 25D4 does start at rather low revs b...
