Re: Gearchanging
German engineering has an enviable reputation, so I was surprised when I found the gear selection on the BMW mini is counter intuitive; to select reverse one pushes the lever to the right then UP towards the front of the car, instead of pulling left and DOWN towards the way you are about to travel,...

Re: EV story
I was in my minor yesterday giving way at a T junction, wanting to turn right. There was a bit of traffic on the main road, and it was taking a while. Three or four cars were waiting behind me. Finally there was only one car on the main road, coming from the right. It was a brand new electric BMW, ...

Re: Led headlights
Philips make a 'Classic' H4 LED bulb that has a light similar in colour temperature to halogen. Fitted into an H4 headlamp the lamps look standard but with far more light output. Philips LED lamps are designed to work exactly as the halogen bulbs do so no unruly light scatter. I have a set in mine a...

indicator repeater light mod.
My '68 of course has the solid spoke steering wheel, and due to my torso height, when the indicator stalk is down to indicate right, it aligns with that wheel spoke and I can't see it at all. It self returns poorly in that direction as well, so I decided to come up with a low impact solution. I went...

Re: fiat T/C engine rebuild
I've always thought of 'bottom end' as the bottom end of the conrod, I.e. mains and big ends. Top end is small end/pistons. Both 'ends' are in the block.
Above that, head and valve gear.

Re: Vibration felt when clutch pedal starts to engage
The first motion shaft bush in the rear of the crankshaft is and should be an self lubrication oil retention 'Oilite' bush not a phosphor bonze bush. The 'Oilite' bush should be soaked in engine oil for 24hrs before fitting. Ok,, well I didn't go near that, at least, I don't think I did ... the clu...

Re: I bought another one
I'd definitely do an oil and filter change unless you are absolutely sure it has a recent one. I'd take a strobe gun and check points gap and timing too. I'd also take a portable tyre inflator or a can of fixaflat if it has tubeless tyres and confirm you have a decent inflated spare and the tools t...

Vibration felt when clutch pedal starts to engage
Hi!
The Traveller is currently our daily drive, but I am becoming concerned about an engine speed vibration that comes through the pedal just as it takes up engagement. As soon as pressure is applied it goes but is felt just at the point the free play is taken up.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Re: Don’t see if this has been asked m o t
Thanks for the explanation, but I don't get the failure with a dry screen. No wiper is going to clear a dry screen, especially in the examples you give of mud or bird poo, it's simply going to spread it and make vision worse. Back to my original point, are you saying there is now no documented proc...

Re: Cam/Crank timing.
Surely once the timing case has been refitted, and the crank pulley put back on, the timing mark on that relative to the cover 'prongs' is the reference? As long as that is lined up and No1 is tdc on compression, all is good? It never occurred to me to see what piston was at the firing point ( if an...

We failed a Traveller on wipers as they wouldn't move on a dry screen but everything else was good. The owner tried to convince us 'they were all like that' bless her! I'm curious to know on what basis you failed this for testing it on a DRY windscreen? The older versions of the MOT Tester Manual u...

Re: Octane value in the sixties
My '66 Rover 2000TC had a factory sticker on the rear screen which advised '5 Star petrol only' which was (I believed at the time) 100 octane. The 'super' in the local BP garage has 99' written on the pump. 4 star was 98 octane I seem to remember. As far as I'm aware no fuel in the seventies in yhe ...

Hi John. You will probably get a hundred different answers to this on. Some say the fuel pump diaphram need replacing. Someone told me that if I used E10 my carburetter would dissolve. I have only changed the flexible fuel pipe in my Traveller. My reasoning is that if anything else goes wrong I wil...

I can certainly check steering track rods Bush’s etc , all common sense stuff is good / my concern is what they would expect the brake readings to be on there rollers. Ie do they allow a tolerance for 60 yr old car with drum brakes no servo etc. on modern cars your car is almost thrown off the roll...

Re: Slight 'growl' under acceleration
My car does have 20w/50 oil, which is probably in most engines. Are there any alternatives to consider? Generally an extremely contentious topic! I'm running a synthetic 10W-40 with a good ZDDP package for the first 1000 miles as I replaced cam followers along with the bottom end bearings. I'm chan...
