As I do not have a crank handle I will start the car and remove the starter motor to see if it still makes the noise.

How would the ring cause the noise? only even the starter is permanently engaged, to menable it to make the Noise.
I will remove the starter motor cone to be 100% shore it is dissengaged.

So last week I had to be towed home from work as starter was playing up. (Morris Minor 1098cc Load Noise from engine Van 1969). Pulled the started motor out and removed and cleaned Bendix and tested which was all ok as it was sticking before and starter continued while engine was going. So yesterday...
