Re: Piston rings too tight ?
Good news. With a “proper” starting circuit setup and not using jump leads the engine is now turning over happily on compression. Compression is even across all four cylinders at above 175psi. Thanks to all for the advice and encouragement which is so important when carrying out restoration work. Ch...

Re: Piston rings too tight ?
The block had been re sleeved back to standard with new pistons as part of a gold seal rebuild prior to my ownership and from measurements of both the bores and pistons and visual inspection, has seen very little running time. With the original rings the engine turned over very smoothly. I have orde...

Re: Piston rings too tight ?
The oil pressure is 40psi when cranking. All valvegear is in place and set to 12 thou. Each piston had a similar resistance when fitting but the new rings were quite difficult to compress with the ring compressor. The starter was a new spare I had and seems ok but I am using jump leads to connect to...

Re: Piston rings too tight ?
Thanks for your replies. It is a new starter motor but will check the battery and give it a good charge and try again. The engine is still out of the car so a bit difficult to use the starting handle but using a spanner on the crank pulley it can be turned quite easily and smoothly, although with so...

Piston rings too tight ?
I have recently rebuilt my 1098 engine and have been fastidious in making sure that everything has been checked and measured before re assembly. The crank rotates beautifully with new bearings. I have measured the bores , pistons etc and all is good. The problem I have is that when I fit the pistons...

Temperature sender tap size?
Hi, could anybody please advise me of the thread for the temperature sender on a 1098 head ? I would like to clean up the thread prior to fitting a new sender. I am assuming it is a taper thread in the head and parallel on the sender. I have measured it at 18tpi but can’t make it match any of the ta...

Re: Ignition lead position conundrum ?
All sorted thanks to the valuable information from the members of this forum. A couple of lessons for myself: 1. Always read the correct instructions for the correct engine in the manual. 2. When a job just will not make sense, stop and give your brain a break, the answer is usually something quite ...

Re: Ignition lead position conundrum ?
Thanks for your replies. The engine is a 1098 and is an 8G serial number which I think is a Gold seal reference. The only thing that is different to the original engine is the timing chain and sprockets but I am sure that this is aligned correctly ie: crank key way at 12 o,clock and cam key way at a...

Ignition lead position conundrum ?
I am in the final stages of my engine rebuild and have been trial fitting items while I have the opportunity to have a clear view prior to installation. I have followed the workshop manual for fitting the distributer drive gear, ie number 4 at TDC, install with the slot vertical small segment forwar...

Flanged cylinder head nuts, are washers needed?
I am fitting a new set of uprated cylinder head studs and flanged nuts as part of my rebuild and, having perused previous posts, am a little confused ( not unusual for me !) as to wether or not they require hard washers to be fitted ?
Thanks
Joe.
Thanks
Joe.

Re: Cleaning oil passages.
Having now cleaned all oil passages thoroughly and tapping out for threaded bungs, can anybody recommend a thread sealant for the bungs ?
I am wary of using ptfe tape as any broken off tape may bung up passages and defeat the initial object.
Thanks.
Joe

Thanks for all the information it’s, as always, very useful.
I have now ordered a set of studs/ nuts from mini spares and will refer to the new tightening sequence once they arrive.
Thanks again.
Joe.

Updated cylinder head studs.
I am doing a full re build on a 1098 engine and am wondering if uprated cylinder head studs and nuts are worth adding as part of this ? I understand that the torque settings can be raised using these studs but just wanted to check that the raised torque is not likely to cause any issues. I have chec...

Re: Valve grinding with hardened seats ?
Thanks for the reassurance.
The exhaust valves do have a nice broad-ish band and, although the inlet seating is towards the top of the valve seat, it is a smaller yet reasonable width.
As you say there is a lot of hard work involved in getting to this stage.
Thanks again.
Joe.

Valve grinding with hardened seats ?
I have been grinding in a new set of valves into hardened valve seats . I can get a nice grey ring around the middle of the sealing face on the exhaust valves but get a narrower grey band near the top of the sealing face on the inlets. I have filled the combustion chambers with white spirit and ther...

Engine machining recommendation?
Does anybody have any recommendations for re boring, crank grinding service etc in the West Yorkshire / Greater Manchester area?
There appears to be quite a few advertising but would prefer go on personal recommendation.
Thanks.
