Re: Octane value in the sixties

I don't think 3-star fuel is the same as E10 is it?

The old star rating would have contained lead for a start. I'm not sure whether they also contained ethanol back then though.

Re: Cylinder head refurb

I think it's valve seats that you change for unleaded fuel, not the valves themselves. Perhaps a replacement exchange head would be the best idea? I think ESM do them, not cheap though.

Cheers Phil. I'd never have guessed that and I suppose it's not a good donor/upgrade for a Minor.

You may just have saved me a 6-hour round trip :tu1:

Engine, best guess

Hi Gang There is an engine going cheap near to me but I can't work out what it is. The seller, it would seem, has no idea either and possibly found it as part of a clear out of her old mans' garage. I'd say an early 948cc motor, any advances? Unknown_ASeries_Engine.jpg I have asked her to check the ...

Re: Aluminium radiator

I got tempted by the low price of the alu rads as well and bought one almost as soon as I bought the car.

It'll be a long time before I get around to fitting it so I can't really help you. I would be interested to know whether they are any good though.

Hi Phil. I'd love to have a 948 block and crank please, especially if they don't need any work. Where abouts in Hampshire are you?

Re: A-series 1098 rebuild video (also blocked breather)

Why do all the pedestals in those photos have oil holes in them if the head only has one? I would like to have seen the acid bath the guy used. You're right about the cleanliness, not going be as easy for a hobby mechanic but that's part of the challenge. The machines that these workshops have run i...

Top man. I just found that o-ring on eBay and snapped one up for €2.53 delivered!

Re: Engine ID

I finally got the nod to visit the engineers yesterday and it wasn't good news. The crankshaft recon will cost over €500 and block work (honing, surfacing, new distributor flange, fit camshaft bearings) more than €300. :o Flange2.jpeg Flange1.jpeg This is the dizzy flange that the drive spindle goes...

Re: Parking Sensors

When I had this problem on my old Galaxy, it was the wire that was the problem, not the sensors. Visual inspection once bumper is removed and then a simple continuity test to confirm. Saves spending money on sensors if not needed although checking the pins for corrosion is also worth doing.

Re: Lockheed Brake M/C

Thanks for the comment guys. I used a 13/16th socket to loosen the caps which weren't on that tight. I was considering to put them in the ultrasonic cleaner and buy a service kit to recommission one of them to start with and buy new caps as Phil suggested. If success I'll do the other as a spare and...

Lockheed Brake M/C

I've managed to get myself a couple of Lockheed brake m/cs on the cheap but the filler nuts look weird on both of them. Do they all look like this?

I thought the Lockheed units were the ones to get, rather than a pattern unit.

I have just painted both mounting plates in gold and it obviously makes sense to do the drilling while it's off the car. :tu1:

2000 litres, nearly 500 gallons ! are you sure ! Cheaper to buy a new chassis !! That's exactly what I thought when I saw that it's 50 quid for 5 litres. Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?

I watched a video of Edd China yesterday using nearly 2000 litres of Evaporust on a Land Rover chasssis. Seemed to get a very good result from it. Personally I've used Jenolite rust treatment to good effect. It's like milk that you brush directly on to the rust and it turns the metal black. I do giv...
