Re: In the Boot
I asked this question on here last time when I had a 700-miles journey ahead of me to get my car home. Without searching for the responses I do remember buying a cheap fuel pump after it being recommended. Other useful items could include some top-up oil, a tow rope, foot pump, jump leads and a batt...

Re: What was the best thing you got to help you with your Moggy !
Impact gun. I was full of dread when I was tearing apart the engine because of the crankshaft bolt. I remember having an old mini about 30-years ago of which I wanted to replace the rattling timing chain. I had the thing in gear, nudged up against a wall with a big extension bar and still couldn't l...

Re: Electronic Ignition
I hope this resurrection is alright with you guys but I have a quick and related question. I found a box yesterday with an Accuspark dizzy inside it. I've obviously bought it, along with hundreds of other parts, in preparation to use but I can't for the life of me remember doing so. My question is w...

Re: Cheappie fuel pumps.
I carry one of these for emergency, easy to fit, no electrics, light and rolls up to store in boot. When connected between pump output and pipe to carburettor the bulb will reach passenger quarterlight if you needed to drive a distance  Just curious, how many squeezes per mile do you need to m...

Re: Cheappie fuel pumps.
I bought one of those pumps last year intending to use it only in an emergency. I'd never recommend using one as a replacement to an "iffy" SU pump. I would recommend fixing or servicing the SU, or even just replacing it with a working one. Repair kits are not all that expensive. https://s...

Thanks for sharing that nostalgia. I did wonder how after only 6-years since production had ceased, that the Minor could be considered anywhere near a classic but it certainly is now.

I read/watch/listen to these guys fairly regularly because they are about the only open and honest media org I've ever found.
Today I was delighted to see a Moggy used on their front page.

Re: 1966 2 door saloon Milly restoration project
Fantastic! Looks very presentable in the first photo, what a bargain! The old pickup photo made me smile. It's a if someone had deliberately and strategically remove the headlight, dropped the bumper at an angle, opened the door to make it look as rough as possible. You're doing the Lords' wor...

Re: indignity of being Towed
I guess it's part of owning a classic. The more you learn the less you hopefully brake down. I thought it was "the more you learn, the less you know"? I feel quite fortunate sometimes. I drove the car I bought last summer from London to Munich, bought an absolute ton of spares and di...

Re: Camshaft refitting
Has anyone ever made a manual for engine rebuilding using all of Phils' advice and comments? Every time I read them I think I must remember that but haven't gotten around to documenting them properly. There are also some really useful things that Stephen has shared recently too. I'm going to start s...

Re: Yet another Starting Problem
To put a close on this thread, I fitted the Frankenstein of a starter motor last night and she pretty much fired immediately and ran nice and smoothly for a few minutes. Hoping to have the same luck to get a modern car started this weekend. Unfortunately it'll be a lot more hassle to remove the SM i...

Re: Second hand engine questions
Is it possible to tell from a photo whether valve seats have been hardenened? I'd guess that they have been due to the ring and slight lip I can see in the photos. Doesn't look bad at all. A tip I saw for testing the head and/or just making it shiny is to push it back and forth over fine sandpaper o...

Re: Yet another Starting Problem
I just swapped the commutator from the original part over to the working one which had the narrower bolt holes - and it still works! So the fault with the original SM lies somewhere within the steel body. I did test it and still nothing happens when it's given 12V directly. I should have thought of ...

Re: Yet another Starting Problem
Funnily enough, I watched that video about 2 hours ago! :tu1:  There is another one, about 30 minutes long by some Aussie bloke which is a good watch but right now, without a bendix spring compressor I'm going to have to leave it until I can get one. Alternatively I may pop in to a local engine...

Re: Yet another Starting Problem
Thanks for that. Pity it doesn't list the model I need for a 1970 car but at least I know I have to pay attention to the part numbers. I did open up the original faulty SM earlier because I am curious to know why it just suddenly stopped working. Nothing obvious but I do wonder about this thin stray...

Re: Yet another Starting Problem
I'll tell you what would have been useful, knowing that Lucas M35 starter motors are not interchangeable! :-? Just tried to fit the one that works but discovered that the mounting flange bolt holes are narrower than the one I removed. So, perhaps the only working SM I have is from a Mini or somethin...

Re: Ex-Military Traveller
Thank you both for the very helpful input. I had arranged a call with the seller on Friday evening and had already explained by email that I'd have a 9-10 hour drive each way with a trailer to pick it up, so I wanted to be as confident as I could be that I knew what I was buying. I've driven that fa...

There's no rush, slowly and methodically does the trick
A post like that would be a lot more interesting with photos though.
