Re: Sodium v LED Street Lights

A good way of saving energy would be do away with many streetlights- I've never found them of any benefit while driving and have lived in two villages without them and the assault/murder rate was no higher than elsewhere, plus a part of a city which had very, very few, and never felt in any danger. ...

Re: Various transmission questions

Although a good option back in the day no doubt, the Land Rover option is probably not so great now- lots of trouble reported in the Land Rover world (and trouble in my own experience) of even genuine LR rubber bushes now, let alone the aftermarket alternatives. Thank goodness we now have polyuretha...

Re: Please help... he won't start :(

Not sure from the wording if you're suggesting I'm advising throwing money around without a structured fault finding process first, or reinforcing what I have already mentioned, sorry. But if as you say, you read my previous post (Sun Apr 24, 2022 7:38 pm) you'll note I gave instructions for checkin...

Re: Various transmission questions

Sounds like it might well be the propshaft, although we should always be prepared to be suprised, best as you say to check it to either eliminate it or overhaul it if required, then see what noises if any are left. Yes an overhaul of the clutch mechanism should certainly improve things and may well ...

Re: Electronic ignition

get a satisfaction from undertaking the routine maintenance required Agreed, and not only that, a routine maintenance session can be combined with a thorough check over to make sure nothing is working loose, or chafing... or catching that stone caught between brake pipe any body just before it wore...

Re: Electronic ignition

thought this subject hadn't been discussed for a while. Same repiles as usual. i fitted accuspark years ago and have never had a problem with it. i'd never go back to the old stuff of points etc. why would you? do you still get up and go over to change the TV channel? are you currently using a noki...

Re: Please help... he won't start :(

As mentioned, it probably is the cause- a punctured float or malfunctioning needle valve will cause the mixture to be overly rich, either constantly or intermittently and altering the mixture setting and idle speed will never compensate for it. Yes a bit of a pain financially, but well worth doing. ...

Re: Please help... he won't start :(

Check the new rubber petrol hose every couple of months, especially the inside of any bends, and at each end where the hose clips put it under pressure. Don't be suprised if it lasts less than a year. There are a lot of bad batches around at the moment, and it's a time bomb- even the best-willed, qu...

Re: Please help... he won't start :(

Just thought I'd add a bit more about the fuel pump, apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs! The pump is powered by an electric solecnoid (electromagnet) which pulls a diapraghm against a spring, filing a chamber with petrol. When it has done this, a contact point (simple elctrical switch) i...

Re: Please help... he won't start :(

Take care, petrol leaks can result in fires and total losses, don't drive until this is sorted! Two things could be happening here. 1. The float could be punctured, therefore it will not be bouyant enough to press the needle into its seat and cut off the fuel supply to the float chamber. This will c...

Re: Various transmission questions

Regards the propshaft, there are three areas of wear- Two UJs, and the splines. To check for wear, out of gear and handbrake on. You need to grip the main body of the propshaft in one hand and the rear flange in the other and try and twist them relative to each other, and check for up and down or si...

Good quality fuel hose

Hi all, first post here and a recommendation to keep our beloved cars safe! Please, please, everybody check the flexible rubber petrol hose from fuel pump to carb. Inspect visually for cracks, these often occur invisibly on the inside of bends, so flex the hose gently by hand and make sure no cracks...
