New hood fitting

I'm halfway through fitting a new hood to my convertible. How everything (hood, weather strip, and finishing strip) fits round the front wooden "beam" is a bit confusing. I believe that the weather strip is fitted first to be a seal along the top of the windscreen. What mainly confuses is ...

Re: A strange one.

True, when the piston is up the opening in the gland is bigger to allow more fuel through. However, the SU principle is more involved. Due to the fuel level in the bowl is lower than the top of the jet/gland, the fuel needs to be pulled out of the gland. The steady state of the dashpot (jet - gland...

Re: A strange one.

Just to clarify, when opening the throttle the intent of the oil in the damper is to slow the rise of the dashpot and needle. The wider opening of the throttle puts more vacuum on the jet to pull more fuel in to initiate acceleration. With out the damper, the piston will rise rapidly and very high ...

Re: The art of imprecise or approximate engineering

Hard to tell if you are deprecating or praising fitting taper bearings by feel.
I've been adjusting taper bearings by feel for 60 years and haven't had a failure.
Maybe modern taper bearings are different to the old ones?

Re: Head off

The 2 on the block refers to the grade size of the bore which may have differed slightly from the standard size due to machining tolerances. On the original factory build, the pistons would have had a 2 inside a diamond shape stamped adjacent to the block stamping. On an engine rebuild, these number...

Re: Compression Pressure

To answer your originasl question Bob, A good engine should have at least 150, dry that is.. My engine just had new rings and a valve job, and is showing 160 to 170.

Re: Std piston rings

The ESM rings might have been perfectly OK, but I didn't have confidence in them. American made.
I will try to scan the fitting instructions and post them on here so folk can see the deviation from standard spec.

Re: Std piston rings

I got rings from ESM a month or so ago. They didn't comply with the standard 4 ring type in any way. I posted details in a thread on here at the time.
I finished up sourcing some original Cords rings which appear to have done the trick regarding smoking and oil consumption.

Re: Coming to a complete stop

You don't say if you have replaced the coil. I would do that and see what happens, i.e. your problem soumds to me to be coil related.

Re: Head off

I had a similar experience with my bores and pistons, I bought a set of rings which turned out to be unsuitable. No top ridge dodger. plain 2nd ring. 3rd ring if fitted according to the instructions had a ridge dodger at the bottom! Oil control rings were devoid of spring. Needless to say, I didn't ...

Re: Treating rust chips and spots

Without painting a complete panel it will be difficult to achieve a "perfect finish". And then matching the newly painted panel to the rest of the car will be difficult. I think you are trying to achieve what many on here have been unsuccessfully trying to do for years. Good luck, and let ...

Convertible rattles

My 1967 convertible rattles and bangs at every road bump.
Is this normal for convertibles?
What would be the normal suspects?

Re: Positive earthed..???

Way back in the 60s, there was a lot of correspondence about positive earth corrosion which is why most manufacturers had changed back to negative earth by the end of the decade.
It's easy to change over either way with no new parts needed apart from battery terminals.

Re: Starter won't engage

When you use the starting handle you get full 12+ volts at the coil, whereas when using the starter, you will only get around 10 volts to the coil. Thus a better spark when using the handle.

Re: Piston rings

Thanks Oliver. Points taken. Going any further than a reringing job really means a complete engine ovehaul. Oh, and while I'm at it a new clutch and having gone that far, a recon gearbox and back axle. And so it goes on. Anyway I've ordered a set of Cords rngs. I've used these in the past on an A40 ...

Re: Piston rings

Thanks for your input here Phil, and the others. Although the rings fit well enough, I am a bit perturbed about the deviations from the standard as in your diagram. I can't see the oil rings doing much good which defeats the object of doing the job in the first place! The bores are standard and I ca...
