Re: How many of you can weld, and how did you learn?

I watched a _lot_ of youtube videos on mig welding bodywork. I also went on a welding course covering MMA, mig, Tig and gas. But the videos and practice on scrap would be enough. Main problem I have is being disciplined to go very slowly and letting the metal cool down. The videos on the internet m...

That's a very kind offer, but I'm down in Surrey. Thank you though! :tu1:

Re: How many of you can weld, and how did you learn?

Thanks for the interesting replies guys. I'm thinking of 'giving it a go' as it looks like it might be fun (that's not to say that I don't think being proficient requires a lot of skill!). I suppose one day it might be nice to be able to do non-visual bits of my car (as I'm aware of some crunchiness...

How many of you can weld, and how did you learn?

As title really, how many people on the forum can weld and how/why did you learn? :D

Re: Fuel pump identification

It is the wrong pump as you suggest. Looks like a pump made by the company Hardi rather than the correct SU pump. Stephen Thank you. That's interesting! I presume these pumps are designed for the Minor so it's fine . It seems to do it's job as far as I can tell! I'm a little unsure why anyone would...

Fuel pump identification

Hello! I was updating my parcel shelf, and I noticed one of parcel shelf holes had a big old screw in it, coming from the engine bay. Upon further inspection it looks like my pump is held on with some sort of strap rather than being attached to the battery tray like I’ve seen others. Does this appea...

Crash pad bar

Hello! I've been refurbishing my parcel-shelf-crash-pad area (not sure I'd wanna crash into it, but there we go). When I removed my crash pad bar I noticed two metal pieces seemingly loose at either end of it. Does anyone know what they're for? They seem like they could just be spacers... But then w...

Re: Carb question

Good news! I was able to change and gap the points. I actually changed all the replacey bits as I had a set that had everything connected together (in fact I have two…). I kept the dizzy on the car as I wasn’t feeling very brave… it was a little tricky but it seems to have worked. I did, of course, ...

Thanks, interesting stuff!

I’ve always been reluctant (so far) to get involved with the timing as it seems a complete mystery. Particularly when a ‘strobe’ is involved! :o

Re: Carb question

The fuel is a little old, but I've not noticed much of a difference whilst it's been in. I've also topped up the dashpot oil, although maybe it's worth trying a different viscosity. I suspect it's a case of just making sure everything is good/clean/tight one at a time as there's not a specific fault...

Thanks all for your thoughts. I appreciate that no one on this forum has any obligation to help a stranger on the Internet yet you always continue to do so! :tu1: I imagine part of my problem is lack of use, but servicing the points/dizzy and valve clearances might be a good next step. I've been a b...

Carb question

Hello! :D For a while I've been bothered about having an 'undulating' idle, comparing myself (or my car, rather) to the smooth sewing machine-like rhythm of some of the cars I see on YouTube. It's generally satisfactory, but the ignition light does tend to pulse a little, and it could be improved. A...

Re: Oil pressure switch 'T'

Well! I’ve now managed to fit all the parts, and after some trial and error nothing’s leaking (fingers crossed, still more testing to be completely sure!). My gauge is saying I have around 2KGs at idle (which google tells me is about 30psi) :D I suspect the number can be taken with a large pinch of ...

Re: Oil pressure switch 'T'

Is this what you are after? oil filter head union.JPG Note that there are two different unions. The top union has a taper thread into the filter head and the bottom union has a parallel thread into the filter head and I have used a Dowty washer as the seal for the parallel thread. Assemble everythi...

Re: Oil pressure switch 'T'

Hello all. I come back to you after a bit of a disaster  I got the oil pressure adaptor pickup as suggested further up the post. I thought I’d have a go at fitting it. Seemed reasonably simple. Reversal of removal etc. Anyway, this is where the disaster begins. I couldn’t get the angle correct...

Re: Coolant temp sender

I don't know which thermostat is fitted as I've not had to go inside the housing yet. The gauge and temp sensor are matched and new but cheap  which I suspect is the issue. :tu1: I took a chance with mine; I brought a new 'Smiths' Sender and paired it up to a classic Smiths Gauge, with just C-...
