Re: Almost a new owner

Other considerations include, when you would like to use it, do you have facilities/skills for major repairs it could be a major 1-2 year project, in my opinion unless you want to get stuck into a major task over a long period of time (many people do) buy the best example your budget allows. Don't b...

Re: Engine overheating?

Also bear in mind that if you are just pottering around the side streets on an estate the airflow through your rad grill will be minimal, on a run the airflow will be greater and may reduce the water temp. remember all the old cars boiling up in the traffic jams on the way to the seaside back in the...

Re: Engine overheating?

Hi 90 degrees is about normal for standard running, if it is not losing water I would give it a longer run (take some water with you) if it boils up make sure you let it cool before topping up.

Hope this helps

Re: vehicle lighting

Volvo 240 series had running lights in the 70's, but the rear were on as well as the front. Volvo were made with safety in mind back then with lots of safety features, side impact bars, built in roll cage and all round disc brakes, they were way ahead of the game. I agree with the comment re dial li...

fresh fuel really does make a difference

I have read most threads on fuel going stale, and have now experienced it first hand. My minor has only been started a few times over the winter/spring so mainly on choke for most of the time, the other day I took it for 15 minute run and it ran lumpy and not as sweet as usual. I assumed dirty plugs...

I love the front cover artwork on the 50's practical motorist mags, they are good enough to frame. Plus as mentioned the DIY jobs, remember all the guys under the bonnet on nearly every street on a sunny Sunday morning!

Re: Unusual way of scrapping a split screen van

Some of the old mills are still standing in the 'weavers triangle' in the photo, and there are about 6 mill chimneys remaining, many mills were destroyed by fire even after use as a weaving shed due to the wooden floors being saturated with oils from cotton production. There is still a beam engine i...

Lots of mills and chimneys gone, but the town is a lot cleaner now, 100,000 looms in the 1920's and a forest of chimneys

Unusual way of scrapping a split screen van

This was a publicity stunt in the early 60's showing the pinpoint skill in demolition of a mill chimney by a local steeplejack, you can just see the van at the base of the chimney

Re: 948cc cruising speeds

Hope the valve clearances does the trick, it might be worth testing the accuracy of your speedo too, in convoy with another car at 50, a 10% error is not uncommon on older cars.

Re: Trafficators

A few years ago I had an Austin 35 van with only trafficators fitted, although great as a part of history they are not good for signalling as has been mentioned. I would keep them but also have the indicators. I used to use hand signals alongside the trafficators and people thought I was on drugs wi...

Digital multimeters are very useful and not expensive, but not so good measuring output voltage near a running magneto or dynamo the magnetic field created seems to send the display haywire, I find an analogue meter best for testing mag/dyno volts out.

I prefer sodium lights but saving energy is important, one advantage sodium have over LED is in fog, as with the old yellow fog lights they did seem to penetrate the fog better than white, or am I just looking through (xx rose xx) sodium tinted glasses?

Re: Highway code question

You should not park within 10 metres of a junction unless in a designated parking place (though people do) you can enter a hatched area with a broken line boundary if you need to, but not a hatched area with a solid line boundary. Mind you, there are lots of highway code rules that are ignored these...

Re: Caravaning with a Traveller

One of the 'Bangers and cash' new series programmes shows a minor towing a teardrop (modern) caravan, they are light in weight but also light regarding features, basically a mobile bed, it looked great as the caravan is narrow and stylish, worth a watch if you are considering towing a van, it will b...
