Thanks all but I'm off for now
Many thanks to all who have helped me either directly or indirectly over the last 3 years with my Morris. I've moved on to pastures new for now so won't bother you anymore for the time being. What great little cars these are! And what a terrific resource this is. If my new acquisition has even half ...

Re: rear dampers (shock absorbers)
I have spax adjustable dampers all round on my current saloon. My previous traveller had functioning lever arms all round. The difference is quite startling. The spax were initially too stiff for my liking so I set the softer, two clicks from softest compared to 8. The ride is very accomplished and ...

Re: A breathing question
You may also find, as I did, that sorting out the breather system reduces or even eliminates oil leaks you may have.
My traveller left a trail of oil not unlike the Torrey Canyon did in the 60s until the breather was sorted out.

Re: changes to historic status
Yep, the saloon is about 60kg lighter but not sufficient to account for the significant difference in braking quality. The pal I sold the traveller to changed the front shoes to old stock asbestos shoes (!!!!) and he says braking is now much better than with the mintex shoes I fitted. The saloon has...

Re: changes to historic status
Best I can advise is that it’s a very common modification and I’ve never heard of anyone having issues with maintaining historical car status. The whole disc/drum brake question has been discussed at great length and the merits and pitfalls are very well documented. I felt my traveller needed better...

Re: FOOTMAN JAMES CLUB INSURANCE
I know insurance varies widely in price according to many factors (location, driver history, annual mileage etc) but that seems expensive. Mine was £67 fully comprehensive this year with Adrian Flux (and it includes breakdown cover as well). That is based on 3,000 miles per annum and the car always...

Re: FOOTMAN JAMES CLUB INSURANCE
I’ve always used AIB specialist insurers and this year the premium went up by about 10%, a quick phone call reduced it by a similar percentage to lower than last year. They managed to find an introductory incentive and added that (or reduced it). I said nothing but I thought they always had to offer...

Re: New springs longer than old ones
ESM said it was not uncommon to have to remove a little material from the chassis rail in the area behind the rear shackle on some cars, particularly those that have had new front hangers which have not been welded in precisely the correct place. The measurement between the centre of each shackle p...

these are mine as fitted about 18months ago, you can see the spring almost in contact with the chassis.

Re: New springs longer than old ones
I had exactly this when I fitted new springs to my traveller last year. They will fit but the angle of the rear shackles will be too acute and they will hit the chassis. After a little research I found a solution which involved grinding and cutting away the flange on the chassis rail and re-welding ...

Re: Rear Suspension Overhaul Advice please
I found something odd. The ‘old’ plate had been manufactured in two pieces, a flat plat and a tubular section pressed together. The tubular section had worked loose on both sides and wasn’t locating the pin securely. The ‘new’ plate was a single piece pressing with the pin hole pressed through and s...

Re: Rear Suspension Overhaul Advice please
I fitted the ESM kit last year, bit of an issue fitting the pins to the spring hanger but otherwise more straightforward than expected. Some photos in my post, last couple show position of axle stand with timber packer. I did one side at a time as all round access wasn't possible. https://board.mmo...

Re: Rear Suspension Overhaul Advice please
No, the beauty of where I put the blocks is that the entire rear of the car is free from obstructions. The springs come out towards the rear in any case

Re: Rear Suspension Overhaul Advice please
Sorry to hear of your accident. I can only explain what I did and felt very comfortable with. I'm lucky to have a mid rise lift but that still has to make contact with the body at some point. The front is easy as it lifts on the forward 'chassis' legs but at the rear I use two wooden blocks (6x4x2 i...

Re: Rear Suspension Overhaul Advice please
sorry, by blocks I mean sturdy blocks on top of good axle stands to spread the load. I'm not advocating supporting the car on a mish-mash of assorted bit of timber.

Re: Rear Suspension Overhaul Advice please
you will need 4 axle stands, two to support the body and two to support the axle. I wouldn't use a plank across the chassis just stout blocks on either side - the exhaust will probably be in the way of a plank

Re: Rear Suspension Overhaul Advice please
Hi. I did exactly this a year or so ago and everything proceeded quite as expected with just a couple of exceptions. The front rear spring pin and plates were a bu99er to get off. In the end I cut the heads off the two small bolts and removed the complete assembly that way. As the replacement kit in...

So you have a similar set up? And yes some of the rubber bushes are on their way out, serviceable for now but will need replacing over winter.
